Why is my 6-month-old cat squinting with a watery, goopy eye?

Young kittens very commonly have bacterial and viral ocular issues. They can also be squinting from an injury to the cornea. I suggest you get her to your vet ASAP so they can diagnose the issue and provide the proper treatment. Eyes are very delicate organs and can go from bad to worse very quickly. You should not wait a long time to seek treatment. The only thing you can do at home while waiting to get her to a vet is to rinse the eye with saline solution. I see what you mean. He could be squinting because the light is painful to his eye, and it may be he has injured his eyes or has an eye infection. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. From the pictures you posted it does not look that there is anything very serious going on with her left eye. Squinting the eye could be result of trauma (usually scratch from another cat) or infection. Please, keep wiping the eye and giving her soothing eye drops. If the eye is not back to normal after 5-6 days, you will have to try and get her seen by a vet.

A squinting eye is never good - usually means pain like there is a scratch or something on the cornea. He should see a vet as soon as possible. If it is a scratch and not treated quickly can get worse and cause you more trouble/money in the end.

If there is an emergency vet within a reasonable distance, I would recommend that Willie get checked out sooner than later. Eye problems can be very painful, and can go from bad to worse very quickly (even overnight). There can be many causes of squinting an eye, including something stuck under the eyelid, corneal abrasion or ulcer, autoimmune disease, among a few others. Without personally seeing it I can't be certain, but what you may be seeing with him "looking to the upper right" is the effect of a raised third eyelid covering the inner part of the eye to make it look weird. You can try to flush the eye with a saline eye rinse, but do not apply any medications topically. Keep him inside in a dim room since bright light makes many eye problems more painful.

He may have something in it like a hair or he could have injured it somehow. Place an e-collar (cone) on him and have him seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. A potential eye injury should be addressed sooner rather than later to prevent unnecessary pain, permanent damage or loss of vision.

Squinting typically means the eye is painful as does the lethargy. From your pictures, the underside of the eyelid appears swollen and his third eyelid is elevated. He could have an eye infection. It can happen alone or be part of an upper respiratory tract infection. He may start with other symptoms such as sneezing and a decreased appetite. Another possibility is a corneal ulcer or scratch across the surface of the eye. This is very painful. The doctor will examine him and may recommend a test to look for an ulcer.
