My cat is squinting after eye ointment. Is it an allergic reaction?

It looks to me like this guy is not responding well to the current treatment. The red you are seeing in the eyes is not likely to be blood, but instead is very red and swollen conjunctiva. This can make treatment even more difficult, because you can't see the eye. It's important that this gets treated quickly, because these infections can quickly cause severe and permanent damage to the eyes. I would notify the vet that initially prescribed the treatment and ask for alternatives. Personally, I would probably switch the antibiotic and eye medication. I hope that helps.

Most often, in cats, the pain is due to an ocular herpes virus infection or a scratch on the corneal surface. I suggest you take him to the vet for an examination.

Yes, Evie could have had her eye scratched playing with the kitten. I would avoid putting an ointment on it as it may make things worse. Have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning. Best of luck.

Squinting the eye could be result of trauma (usually scratch from another cat) or infection. Please, keep wiping the eye and giving her soothing eye drops. If the eye is not back to normal after 5-6 days, you will have to try and get her seen by a vet.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There is no specific medication to put around his eyes necessarily though there are medications like prednisolone that can help with the itch. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

if you are noticing the eyes are looking worse, I recommend to call the vet asap. It could be an allergic reaction but it could also be a worsening of the viral infection (and the meds have not had enough time to take effect yet). For now, have Banny wear an elizabethan collar. Thats the best way to protect his eye. The I recommend to call his vet and ask about using the eye ointment. Some ointment has a steroid and this will cause significant damage if an ulcer is present on the cornea. The vet may recommend to examine Banny again if they are concerned that an ulcer may be present. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
