Why is my 10-year-old cat sniffing, warm, and breathing rough?

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | neutered | 10 years and 3 months old

I have a female cat, she's 10 years old, and last night she started to sniff a lot and hasn't stopped since. Her breathing is sometimes little rough but overall fine. Her head, however, feels very very warm. She has been eating as usual, and something else that might be worth mentioning is that she is an outdoor cat, but I haven't let her out all day in hopes she gets better. I'm starting to get really worried, and any information would be greatly appreciated.

Pisces could be dealing with a few things. Certainly something like a viral infection, sinus infection, sniffing something up her nose that is stuck in the canal, allergies or less likely, a tumor could all cause her to start sniffing a lot. If she feels warm to you, this could be an indication that she has a fever. I recommend to have Pisces examined by her veterinarian today. If there is evidence of infection, the doctor will give her medication and likely some fluids to try to help her body fight it quickly. Anytime there is breathing concerns, you should always be a little more aggressive in treatment. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Why is my 20-year-old senior cat suddenly having breathing issues?

Poor Spice! These breathing problems could be caused by heart disease, respiratory disease, or cancer among others. This is quite a serious symptom in senior cats, as there are a number of severe diseases that can cause this, and I would have Spice seen today for a physical exam, a geriatric blood panel, urinalysis, and x-rays. Once the cause of her breathing difficulties are found, the vet can discuss treatment options.

My cat is wheezing, coughing at night, and has strong fishy breath. Why?

She could have an infection or asthma causing the cough and wheeze so she should be examined by a vet. Your vet can take an x-ray to evaluate her heart and lungs and then prescribe medications to treat. She may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and/or a bronchodilator to help with the cough and wheeze. Your vet can also check her teeth to make sure she doesn't have a dental problem.

Hi and thanks for posting! Common signs of an upper respiratory infection in cats may be sneezing, coughing, labored breathing or increased respiratory effort, nasal discharge, and ocular discharge. While having a dry nose may not necessarily mean anything significant, the nose being warmer than usual may indicate an elevated body temperature or fever. If Puma continues to have a very warm nose or is also experiencing other changes such as decreased appetite, lethargy, or is experiencing any of the above signs of an upper respiratory infection I indicated, you may want to take Puma into see his veterinarian for an exam and evaluation.
