My cat sniffed outdoor debris. Is aspiration pneumonia a risk?

It is possible she may have aspirated a small amount into her lungs. Monitor for continued coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge or lethargy. If enough was aspirated, the potential for pneumonia exists. A small syringe should be used instead of a spoon. You can slowly squirt the syrup in the side of her mouth and allow time for swallowing to prevent aspiration.

It is normal for the their noses to get in to the food/fluid when they are learning to drink and eat from a bowl. Either the formula tickled his nose or he sucked a little in to his nose. Hi Laila! It could simply be she has a respiratory infection, and I wouldn't get too worried about pneumonia just yet. Signs of pneumonia include labored breathing, loud respiratory sounds, lethargy, reduced appetite, and fever. If she doesn't have those signs as well, I would be more suspicious she has a respiratory infection. I can give you some things to try at home for Kitty. First, you can try starting her on an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight. If she's congested, you can also try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections. Now if she does develop any of the signs I listed above, then I would be concerned about pneumonia, and in that case, I would take her into a vet right away. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Well it depends what the cat was sick with. I'm going to assume the cat was sick with an upper respiratory infection and there isn't anything I would be particularly worried about here. There aren't many contagious diseases we worry about crossing between dogs and cats. I would recommend watching for general signs of disease (lethargy, poor appetite, nasal discharge, coughing/sneezing, vomiting, and diarrhea) in the next week or two just to be safe, but there isn't anything you need to do at this point and a very low likelihood of anything coming from this encounter.

As long as he is still eating and able to sleep comfortably then i would not be overly concerned. Bathing his nose with saline and cotton wool can help free any mucus and make breathing a little easier. If symptoms worsen or he starts breathing with his mouth open I would seek an emergency appointment

It sounds like Loki may have some rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal passage) issues. It sounds stable for now, but it is still best to get him examined by your vet for just an overall health assessment sometime in the next week or so. Definitely get him seen sooner if the coughing becomes more frequent. The coughing could indicate a parasite problem or an undelrying issue with his heart/lungs. If the cough was not there before the endoscopy, then it is likely that it has been caused by the procedure or by the intubation that might have been done for the anaesthesia. This is not uncommon and it could last a week or so.
