My cat is sneezing, losing weight. Is it feline AIDS or leukemia?

A common cause of weight loss in cats is hyperthyroidism. Your vet can run blood work to test his thyroid to determine if he has the condition. Other causes include infections, parasites, liver/kidney disease, endocrine diseases, cancer, etc. Schedule an appointment with your vet for to have a work-up.

Keep in mind that many diseases have similar symptoms, so the only way to definitively know if a kitten has a specific disease is to be blood tested for it, and I do recommend having that done if you suspect your kitten may have one of these diseases. Kittens born to mothers infected with feline leukemia can have it, and symptoms include anorexia, slow and progressive weight loss, poor coat condition, enlarged lymph nodes, fever, pale gums and other mucus membranes, persistent diarrhea, eye conditions, and infections of the skin amount many other symptoms. Symptoms of FIV include fever, poor coat condition, anorexia, diarrhea, eye conditions, infections of the skin, bladder, and upper respiratory tract, weight loss, and various types of cancer and blood diseases which are more common in cats with FIV.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Andrew! Causes of nasal congestion are: upper respiratory infection either viral or bacteria, fungal infections, and cancer. If the congestion has been going on for awhile he should be evaluated and at a minimum started on antibiotics. The weight loss concerns me in an older cat. I recommend full blood work: CBC/Chem/T4 and urine. Common causes of weight loss in older cats are: kidney or liver disease, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), diabetes and cancer. That’s great news that Chase has done so well. The sneezing however can indicate that he could be getting an infection or that it’s something else like allergies or a sinus problem. I recommend to have him examined just to play it safe since FIV positive cats may not have as strong of an immune response (this is highly variable). Hello. Dexter probably is infected with a common feline herpes virus. Cats are infected as kittens & remain infected all their lives. It usually only causes mild, but reoccurring problems, usually at high stress times. However, it does not usually cause weight loss, unless things are severe, & your pictures only shows a very mildly affected cat. So, the next step is to see your vet & make sure he is Feline Leukemia & Feline Immundeficiency virus negative. This is done with just 3 drops of blood in your vet's office & takes 10 minutes. Cats in heart failure don't generally cough. Coughing, congestion, sneezing, lack of appetite, discharge from the eyes and nose, and lethargy can be signs of a respiratory infection in cats. When cats can't smell their food, they won't eat, and that may be why he is losing weight. Gently warm really smelly wet food such as sardine or fish based. I would also take him into a vet now to get checked out, as he sounds really sick to me. Best of luck.
