My indoor cat smells like urine around her backside. Is it a UTI?

Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes it may be normal for a kittens urine to have a stronger odor especially if the urine is very concentrated. You may want to try feeding an all canned diet with water mixed in to help reduce the urine concentration. However, sometimes a UTI can cause a change in urine odor. As long as Beasty is using the litter box normally and not having urinary accidents or going urinating small amounts frequently, I would be less concerned about a UTI. However, if changes in her urination habits occur (like straining to urinate, frequent urination, crying while urinating) or if she stops eating or drinking or becomes lethargic it would be a good idea to schedule a vet visit. Also, if the urine odor persists you may want to bring a sample to your veterinarian to have it evaluated. I hope this is helpful!

It's not likely a UTI, cats tend to suffer from a condition called FLUTD that mimics a UTI but it's actually related to stress and doesn't involve a bacterial infection. in most cases it advances to a urinary blockage and the c at can die within several hours of that happening. you must take him to the vet urgently for treatment.

Most urinary tract "infections" in non-geriatric cats are not caused by bacteria but inflammation caused by stress. This is called Feline Idiopathic Cystitis, and that could be causing Kahlo's symptoms. Have her seen by a vet for this.

The longer he holds his urine the darker in color and stronger odor it can have. Also if he dehydrated it has potential to make the urine a little darker. Since he has issues with a litter box, I would have his urine checked for a UTI or crystals to see if that is complicating the situation and causing some of these problems. You can also add canned food to make sure he is getting plenty of fluids

The faint smell of urine may be from her fur. Sometimes as cats move through their litter, they can pick up the scent of urine. Make sure Ariel's box is clean with a deep layer of fresh kitty litter. This will prevent her from picking up odors. Also, make sure her behind is not wet from urine soaking into her fur. You can purchase cat grooming wipes from your local pet store to help clean her fur without having to bathe her.

I recommend that she has a urine culture performed to ensure there is an infection present and the correct antibiotic is prescribed. If there is not an infection or if it has resolved, then she should have x-rays to look for bladder stones. If this is not the case, idiopathic cystitis is very common in cats. Hi. It could be possible that Stink has a urinary tract infection. If she is urinating.outside the box as well, that could be a sign of a urimary tract infection or stress as well. I recommend contacting your veterinarian to schedule an exam and a urinalysis as well to start. It will provide alot of information and help.guide us to the probable diagnosis.
