My cat's skin turned black after miconazole. Should I keep using it?

What you are seeing is likely dead skin and will fall off soon. Once the skin falls off, there will likely be an open wound. Once this happens I would see the veterinarian for a recheck examination as it will need to be cleaned out from infection to ensure healthy tissue grows back in. I hope this helps! Thank you for including the picture of Marley's skin. This black color change can occur with chronic inflammation, which is my suspicion in this case. I doubt that it's a reaction to the medication, as this would more likely cause some redness and irritation. The color change itself is hyperpigmentation (an increase in pigmentation), but the causes of this are varied and can be temporary or permanent. Regardless, it looks as though this hot spot has healed nicely. It's only a matter of time for the hair to finish regrowing.

I am quite concerned that the dark blue skin may be well on its way to a black color. Black colored skin is generally an indication that the skin has died. It is possible that some of the surrounding areas can die off as well, so I would make sure that the affected area is examined and trimmed away. An oral or injectable antibiotic would probably be very beneficial in this case to prevent further harm. Something else like an e-collar plus a steroid/antihistamine would help address some of the itchiness that Sunny is experiencing. If she continues to aggravate the lesion, the healing process can be slowed considerably or stopped entirely. Hope this helps.

Ringworm is actually caused by a fungal infection (a bit of a misnomer!), so Pickle's deworming treatment will have no impact on the lesion on her nose. That said, ringworm lesions are typically areas of hair loss and dry scaling, and rarely have thick black scabs. It is possible that Pickle injured herself, causing this black lesion. At this point, I recommend monitoring the lesion for another week. If it seems to be going away, there is no reason for concern. However, if the lesion grows, becomes more red or itchy, she should be evaluated by her vet. I hope that all goes well!

Hi and thank you for using PetCoach. If the fungal infection is ringworm, it can take weeks to months to fully resolve. Many times treating the environment as well as the cat is needed. Keep Mia indoors may make it easier to contain the infection and prevent reinfection. The vet can look at hairs under the microscope or try to culture the fungus from Mia to assess if she still has it. Poor Babbi! Babbi really needs to be seen by the vet if that hasn't been improving with the topical clotrimazole. She likely needs systemic medication (either oral or injectable), given the severity of the lesion. If it's not resolving, you may need a biopsy of the skin. We can sometimes see severe changes such as this with other disorders such as autoimmune skin conditions, which would be treated with immunosuppressive medication.

The wipes may be further irritating the area so I would discontinue the wipes and consider trying a topical spray such as Malacetic Conditioning spray (can be found online) and apply twice daily until resolved. This may also be a fungal infection such as ringworm so using the spray will help treat the potential fungal infection. If the area does not improve or it worsens, I would bring Marlow back in for a recheck examination with the previous veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
