My cat is sick, vomiting, and in pain. When should I see a vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Cutee! From your pictures and description Cutee is very sick. I don't understand why you think the Vets in your area do not care about animals. I would ask your neighbors and friends who they like for their pets Vet care and use that hospital. Sadly Cutee needs to see a Veterinarian. Without examining Cutee and establishing a Veterinary Client Patient Relationship it is against the law for us to diagnose and prescribe medications. Cutee needs an exam, fecal test for worms, a belly X-rays, blood work and likely hospitalization to pull her through this. All you can do at home is keep her safe and warm. You can try kitten milk replacer and bottle feed her. Though if she is over 3-4 weeks old kitten food is fine. She is going to become dehydrated, if she isn't already, if she isn't eating or holding anything down. I am very sorry but what Cutee needs to be seen and examine by a Vet to obtain a diagnosis and receive treatment. I wish you both the best!

I'd be concerned he could be injured, and he could have internal injuries causing his pain. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. Cat fights can be dangerous because often times it can result in serious injuries and most of the time what you see on the outside is just the tip of the iceberg and there is more going on internally. I would encourage you to try perhaps to have him evaluated by another veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. He is likely going to need evaluation to see the extent of his injuries and to check for something that could explain his vomiting. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat him accordingly. I am very concerned about his painful abdomen and vomiting so I would recommend you try to seek veterinary help as soon as possible. Good luck!

Vomiting can occur from many conditions such as kidney disease, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Peaches evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. If Boxer is not improving and is not eating or drinking, I would recommend taking him back to the veterinarian for a recheck and having anti-nausea medications and fluids given to see if this helps further. If he continues to not eat, he may need a feeding tube if his liver becomes affected. I hope this helps! I would avoid giving Calpol as cats are very sensitive to this drug and can develop toxicity quite easily. There are safer fever reducers such as Meloxicam that you can have your veterinarian prescribe for you. I hope this helps! It definitely sounds like BoBo has an upset tummy. I am concerned about the amount of vomiting and diarrhea that you have described. Possible causes for this to happen acutely include bacterial or viral gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, toxic exposure, intestinal obstruction, dietary intolerance or food allergy (this would happen if he ate human food he shouldn't have or if you recently changed food or treats), irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal lymphoma, or other internal medicine issues. I think that BoBo should see a vet as soon as possible to start with bloodwork and maybe x-rays depending on the findings of the physical exam. Before you go, check around the house for anything that BoBo may have chewed on, like hair ties, string, carpet, or chemicals. You are right in not feeding BoBo anything, but encourage him to drink water, chicken broth, or pedialyte to try to maintain hydration. Cats can also get electrolyte imbalances soon after having voluminous vomiting or diarrhea. Depending on test results, your vet may prescribe medications for nausea, diarrhea, or even antibiotics and gastroprotectants. If the bloodwork shows severe abnormalities or the symptoms persist despite medications, BoBo may need IV fluids to rehydrate him and correct electrolyte abnormalities.
