What are the chances of a cat's eyes recovering from severe infection?

Poor guy. I can certainly appreciate a lot of swelling of his conjunctiva and discharge from that left eye. This is typically caused by a viral infection. Since there is improvement with the swelling, I would continue the course of treatment. You should also consider adding in an over the counter antiviral supplement called Lysine powder, which is found at most pet stores. This can help boost up Mischiefs immune system to fight the infection. Hopefully this fully resolved by the end of his treatment course. It looks like that left eye may have some ongoing damage ongoing problem with the cornea clear, (front part of the eye). Does she seem like she can see? Does she walk along walls (as though looking to be leaning in for a knowledge of where she is), does she bump into things? If she does not bump into things and DOES seem to be able to see, then her pupils are probably functioning appropriately even if you can't see it. However it is possible too that she has some lens changes... the lens in the left eye looks a bit cloudy in the picture. As long as she's an indoor cat, it shouldn't matter too much whether or not she can see. Most blind animals do quite well and function great as pets. Many times these infections are viral in nature and some can take several weeks before they finally go away. The big things would be to make sure Oreo eats a good diet like Royal Canin. This way you know you are getting good nutrition to support a healthy body. There's a supplement for cats called Lysine which can also help. Lastly, make sure Oreo is negative for immune suppressing viruses such as Felv and FIV. I hope this helps.

This sounds like your pet has an eye infection and it's possible that it initially got better because the medicaiton was working, but was just stopped too soon, is the infection came back. We normally treat eye infections for at least 7-10 days and sometimes longer depending on the depth of corneal damage. I would recommend extending the course of treatment and definitely no topical steroids should be used or this will only make it worse. So no dexamethasine ingredient in the eye medication or Prednisone. You should be giving something like Tobramycin, Terramycin or Neo/Poly/Bacitracin . I hope this helps!

By far the most common cause of corneal ulcers is herpesvirus; so although antibiotic drops are usually indicated to treat secondary bacterial infections or prevent infection, Kit might not be improving because she has viral eye disease. Some vets will try oral antiviral medication or topical antiviral drops. Herpesvirus can be very difficult to treat and it never goes away completely. You may want to ask about referral to an ophthalmologist for the best treatment.

It is hard to say if it will improve with eye drops. the pupil appears dilated also may be a sign of vision loss if there was previous trauma to the eye. She seems very calm with it open and that is a good sign it does not hurt. The best thing to do is see a vet to see if that is a part of the vitreous that healed due to a previous puncture or old penetrating wound, or see if there is something stuck to the eye that needs removal

Poor baby! It looks likes she might have a ruptured corneal ulcer so she needs to be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. It is difficult to determine if the eye can be treated based on just the picture but there is a chance she will not be visual in that eye and enucleation may be the best choice.
