My cat on Semintra has a nosebleed. Should I skip her dose tonight?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Semintra has actions of decreasing blood pressure and decreasing the protein loss with kidney disease. Therefore, if no kidney disease is present, and no high blood pressure is present, then you might see signs of low blood pressure or changes in the sodium and potassium. These are unlikely to occur but possible. Foaming urine is a sign of protein in the pee. Has the urine been checked for protein? I would recommend a Urine Protein:Creatinine Ration to properly assess if protein loss is present. Checking the blood pressure is a good idea as well (although somewhat difficult to perform in stressed cats accurately). I would probably recommend starting on a kidney food as a early management/prevention vs. starting on Semintra, unless your vet has a high suspicion clinically that Nomar has kidney disease (weight loss, dehydration despite drinking/peeing a lot, overly dilute urine, etc.). Kidney values only go up once 75% of the kidneys are affected, so we have to rely on other indicators to catch kidney disease early. Talk to your vet about IRIS staging. The clavaseptin will be fine as it does has a wide dose range. However, the prazosin is not an antibiotic it is a medication used in high blood pressure etc. I assume your cat has some sort if urinary issue or high blood pressure if it is on this medication? Thankfully the dose range for prazosin is 0.25mg to 1mg per cat every 8 to 12 hours so even though you gave a double dose 2 half tablets is still within range. I would go ahead and give your tablets this evening as long as the cat has seemed okay today. Try and stick to the schedule as best you can. If you are worried that your cat is sleepy/dizzy I would take him to the vet as soon as you can.

Hello. Do not worry. Missing a dose or two will not set Nyla back nor worsen her condition. Kidney disease & the subsequent blood pressure problems are both chronic conditions, so a few missed doses, while not ideal, will really do her no harm. Just resume the medication as soon as you can. If Mimi is still fighting a respiratory infection, the blood coming from the nose could be due to what we call rhinitis (inflammation of the sinuses / mucous membranes of the nose). This is common in unresolved upper respiratory infections. If you are only seeing a small amount and the blood is not profuse, you should be ok to wait until this week to have Mimi seen. If she is showing more blood and the amount if profuse, she needs to be seen immediately by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Oh no. Poor guy. The lubricant should not have caused him to have a nose bleed. I suspect there is something else going on here, possibly an adverse reaction to some of the medication he is on, or a separate issue altogether such as rhinitis or a bleeding disorder (rare but still a concern with random unexplained bleeding). I would highly recommend taking Biff back in to your veterinarian as soon as you can for additional testing and treatment based on the results of his tests. I hope that Biff will be ok. Chronic sneezing and bleeding from the nose in a 15 year old cat could be caused by a number of different things, including chronic rhinitis, a severe bacterial respiratory infection, a fungal infection such as cryptococcus, or a nasal tumor. None of these will typically cause any changes on lab work, so usually CT scan/MRI and rhinoscopy are required to get a diagnosis. If this is something you're interested in, then I would ask your veterinarian for a referral to a specialist to have this testing done. Without additional testing, it's likely that you won't be able to find out what the specific problem is, so we're left with treating it symptomatically. Long-term antibiotics such as doxycycline or azithromycin can sometimes be helpful, as there is often a secondary bacterial infection contributing to the pet's symptoms even if this isn't the main problem. Oral or injectable steroids, Cerenia, humidifiers, and even antibiotic/steroid nose drops could all be considered as possible treatment options that may help to relieve symptoms. Your veterinarian should be able to discuss the pros and cons of these various options with you to help determine the best treatment plan for Bailey.

It is best to mix it with canned cat food. I suggest not keeping food out for her all the time so that way she is hungry when you go to feed her. She will be more likely to eat it all. Mix the medicine with the smallest amount of canned food (like a teaspoon or two) and make sure she eats that first. Then you can give her the remaining food. Hope this helps. Best wishes!
