My cat has seizures. Can I safely give her CBD oil and antibiotics?

I can certainly understand your frustration. I would highly recommend not putting CBD oil in your cats ear however. If the eardrum is still ruptured, then nothing but sterile saline should be introduced inside the ear, because anything else can negatively affect her nervous system (balance, coordination, etc). Also there is no evidence that CBD oil will do anything for an ear infection unfortunately. However, I think you should get additional testing done if your kitty isn't doing better. If an inner ear infection is present, this will be evident by a physical otoscopic exam of the ear, to confirm a ruptured ear drum, and a skull radiograph to detect fluid build-up in the inner ear. If an inner ear infection is present then oral antibiotcs, and sterile saline topically, should be able to resolve the infection. In some cases a bacterial culture of the ear needs to be done to determine which antibiotic will clear the infection successfully. CBD treatment in veterinary medicine is still fairly new so there really is not a lot of research right now on dosing and it's effects for various conditions. These products are now becoming more widely accepted as an alternative approach to managing chronic pain in animals. There have been some suggestions that they help reduce seizures. Products labelled for veterinary use seem to be safe so if you were to try a CBD product, there should be no I'll effects. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Poor guy. Since it takes this drug roughly 2-4 weeks to stabilize in your pets system, it is safe to do a mild tapering of the medication. Ask your vet for tapering instructions since this was prescribed by him/her only. I would then consider getting Kasey on an alternative anti-seizure medication called Zonisamide instead. CBD oil is not legalized in many states for pets nor does it have any proof to stop seizures in pets at this time, so it would not be a good option for Kasey. As of yet, we have very little research on CBD oil in veterinary patients, so we cannot make any recommendations one way or the other about this product - we do not know what an appropriate dose might be, and if there are any potential health concerns or drug interactions in cats. In addition, because it's a schedule 1 drug, it's illegal for us to prescribe or recommend.

When using CBD oil products, there is not much research out there that backs any claims at the moment. What we currently have on the market is so variable in strength and the claims are so vast on what it treats. With any CBD oil product, I always caution owners to use them at their own risk. These could have unwanted side effects. I would only use straight CBD oil and not products that contain THC as THC can be toxic to animals. I would speak with the oncologist first and discuss treatment options and ask about CBD products then. I hope this helps!

As it stands right now veterinarians are unable to prescribe CBD oil for their patients. There is some anecdotal evidence proving its efficacy but not enough research has been done to determine its safety and proper dosing. It never hurts to have an open discussion with your vet about new medications to try. However, I would say if Jasmine is doing well on her current therapy I may be hesitant to change it.
