My cat had a seizure-like episode. Is it safe to wait for the vet?

This sounds very much like a seizure.Poor guy. I would try to keep him in a quiet, cozy room for tonight and try not stimulate him any more than necessary until his morning appointment. Sometimes seizures can be exacerbated by stress, so its best to keep him stress free until further testing in the morning. If you do witness another episode like this, then its really valuable to record it so that you can show your veterinarian. I hope that your fur baby Watson will be ok. If he has another seizure that seems to last more than 3-5 minutes, then its really best to take him to the ER vet instead of waiting til morning to get emergency medicine to stop the seizure and hopefully avoid permanent brain damage. If she seems perfectly fine now...eating, drinking, peeing, pooping and walking normally with a normal activity level (not lethargic)... and this was her first episode, there is nothing that your vet could do other than routine screening bloodwork to rule out a liver/kidney issue or low blood sugar as the cause of the seizures. Your vet may also prescribe rectal valium suppositories to have on hand to treat any future seizures. Cats and dogs are usually not started on seizure medications unless they have several seizures a month or a prolonged seizure. Hopefully Rey won’t have any more episodes, but if she does, a short video clip may be helpful to bring to your vet. Good luck!

It could be an idiopathic seizure, meaning there is no known cause. There is a potential it could happen again, so I do think he should see a vet as soon as possible to get checked out, taking him into an ER vet tonight if you can. Best of luck.

Hello. It is very difficult to determine if Junior just had a spasm or a very mild seizure. Since it went away immediately, I would just take a watch & wait position & see if anything happens again, or begins to happen in clusters. He may be having vision problems, high blood pressure or might have had a seizure. If his pupils are wide open, please take him to an out of hours or emergency veterinarian now. He may have high blood pressure and fast intervention can reverse any blindness caused by this. If his pupils are normal and react normally, take him to a vet tomorrow for an exam.

Sorry to hear that Sassy isn't acting right. If she seems to act completely fine after these episodes, it is highly unlikely that we are dealing with a seizure condition. Seizures are usually coupled with long periods of disorientation afterwards lasting hours to days. You may be seeing episodes similar to fainting or partial loss of consciousness. These episodes are typically associated with cardiovascular health such as a blood flow issue or a primary cardiac disease. Cats can throw clots resulting in a condition known as saddle thrombus. When this happens they tend to have very cold extremities, and also tend to be EXTREMELY painful. If Sassy does not appear to be in considerable distress and pain, this is not likely to be the case. I would definitely recommend having her examined as soon as possible to check for any sort of cardiac dysfunction. I would also make sure to have her blood drawn and to have a blood pressure checked. These will be important diagnostic tests to determine what may be happening. Hope this helps!

Hello. I'm sorry to hear that Guinness is having this issue. Yes, it sounds like seizure activity to me based on what you have described. You really need to get him to a vet for an examination and some bloodwork to start with. Epilepsy is possible however, if the seizures have just started now at 6 years of age, epilepsy as a diagnosis is less likely. Usually that shows up at a younger age - between 1 and 4 years. It's not impossible, but less likely. Seizures showing up at 6 years old OR if he has had more than one seizure within a short period of time then it is more likely to be something like neoplasia (cancer) somewhere in the brain or spinal cord. It is really best to document the seizure activity -write down when it happens, how long it lasts, what he does when he has the seizure and video tape the episode(s) if possible so your vet can see what is going on.
