Why are my cat's scabs and hair loss spreading after vet treatment?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is just no way to diagnose this just based on a description. This may be due to allergies for example. This could also be some sort of infection perhaps. This requires further diagnostics which would be done based on an exam. Your veterinarian would be better able to proceed with the needed diagnostics to try to determine what may be wrong. I would highly recommend you have him reevaluated by his veterinarian since things have worsened again. They may be able to proceed with further diagnostics and treatments accordingly. Good luck!

If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Poor guy. It sounds like Maxx either has allergic dermatitis (to something in the environment), skin mites, ringworm, or even an immune mediated skin disorder is possible. I would first have him examined by your vet for a few skin tests (Skin scrape to rule out mites, and consider a ringworm test if the lesions are circular and red). Then the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment based on the findings of those tests. Typically as long as ringworm is not likely, cats respond well to steroids and antibiotics. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Typically a flea allergy causes scabs at the base of the tail if a pet is allergic. A flea product (from a vet- not over the counter) would not hurt her, even if there isn't fleas. And even if you don't see a flea, it doesn't mean they aren't there. If it doesn't help, she may need an antibiotic if there is a skin infection. Good luck and kisses to Minxy!

The most common problem causing Milly's symptoms is a severe flea allergic dermatitis. Regardless I recommend brushing her to remove the old fur and skin, giving a bath with a hypoallergenic shampoo and using Advantage flea prevention on her. You can purchase it at PetCo. She may need antibiotics to heal the skin and your veterinarian will do an exam to determine the cause of her problems. They may run a blood panel in addition to determine if she is anemic or has a metabolic problem. Once they have a diagnosis they will give her the appropriate treatment and hopefully she will recover quickly. Smokey could be flea allergic, meaning he only needed to be bitten by a single flea and exposed to the saliva which is what flea allergic animals react to. I would still treat him for fleas since he was in the cattery. Otherwise he should see your Vet to treat him for the scabs which may consist of antibiotics and steroids. If not fleas it could be an allergy. Scab formation is common in cats with allergies. Cats metabolize medications differently than people and dogs and only veterinary approved medications should be used. I wouldn't self medicate Smokey.
