Why are my cat's scabs and hair loss spreading after vet treatment?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 4 months old | 8 lbs

My cat, Tonks presented with hair loss and irritation above her eye a few weeks ago and we went to the vet who tested for ringworm and determined she did not have it. She gave me medicated wipes to treat the effected area, twice a day which I’ve done every day, since then the area above her eye has gotten bigger and scabbed over. I’ve noticed the scabs have move into her ear, as well as a new one on the back of her head and another small one behind her ear. She’s an indoor only intact female.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It may be Demodex infestation - a skin parasite that may be present in indoor-only cats. Please, take Tonks back to your vet to examine skin scrapes under the microscope and possibly to change treatment she is currently receiving.
