Why is my cat itching, losing hair, and has scabs and raw skin?

When you are petting her and your feel little seeds or what feels like little millet seeds, then it is very possible she could have miliary dermatitis. The #1 cause of military dermatitis is actually an allergy to fleas. It is only takes one flea to induce a flea allergy and the adult fleas can be hard to spot! Eggs and larva can be hard to see as well. Fleas find cracks and crevices to enter your home making household cats susceptible to acquiring fleas. If going to a vet is not an option, you can try bathing her in dawn dish soap (that will get rid of the adult fleas). You can then purchase an OTC flea treatment and preventative product such as Frontline Plus or Advantage to use monthly to ensure your are taking care of the entire life cycle of the flea. If the itching does not subside in a few weeks with the flea preventative, then it may be possible she has another environmental allergy or a food allergy, but I would rule out an allergy to fleas first. :) Thank you so much for your question and I wish you and Ishiban the very best!

Miliary dermatitis is not a specific disease. It is secondary to many other diseases. Causes of miliary dermatitis include insect (flea, mosquito, ear mite, etc.) bite hypersensitivity, atopy (sensitivity to aero-allergens such as pollen, mold, house dust mites, etc.), adverse reaction to a food, bacterial superficial folliculitis (inflamed skin follicles), dermatophytosis (fungal disease), feline scabies, mast cell tumors, and pemphigus foliaceus. Flea hypersensitivity is the most common cause of miliary dermatitis. Diagnosis of the root cause of miliary dermatitis may require cytology, skin scrapings, insect control trial, elimination diet, fungal culture, and biopsy. Treatment is based on eliminating or treating the root cause of the miliary dermatitis. This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Hello. This may be a condition called military dermatitis, a type of allergy. You can try changing the things in her environment like the litter & food, but you cannot change what she touches & breathes in. You can try switching her to Science Diets Sensitive Stomach & Skin, but she may need a true hypoallergenic diet, or it may be something completely different causing her allergies. The best thing to do is to see your vet who may decide to give Mittens a long acting steroid shot. If it clears up her skin, then she may periodically need an additional injection. Please, take Millie to your local vets for appointment as soon as possible as she will make things worse by continuous biting and scratching. Your vet will likely prescribe a course of anti-allergic medications that should stop the itching and let the skin heal.

If Morris is not on any sort of a flea control I strongly suspect this may be flea related. Cat skin off and have a flea allergy wear just the bite from one or two fleas will cause them to break out and scabs around the head and neck. Because cats groom so much you may not necessarily find any fleas or flea dirt on his body. If he is not on flea prevention I strongly recommend a product such as advantage board vantage multi for cats or Bravecto for cats if you have any problems with ticks in your area. It can take up to 3 to 4 months to get rid of a flea infestation by treating only the pets. If Morris is very itchy a veterinary visit for medication to help relieve some of the itching and assess for infection may be necessary while you get the fleas under control. If fleas are not a problem then other allergies can possibly cause the same type of skin lesions. Poor Inky! There are a number of different things that can cause excessive itching and hair loss like this in cats. The most common possibilities would include allergies (food allergies, or an allergy to something in the environment), fleas, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Even if your other cat is not affected, Inky may be more sensitive to certain things than he is. Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so I would recommend taking Inky to the vet for an exam when you are able to. He/she can do some simple skin tests to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it.
