Why does my active cat have runny stool after eating many treats?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 5 lbs

My cat has had a runny light brown stool for 24 hours. She's bright and playful and eating and drinking normally. I've given her a lot of cat treats like Dreamies and Felix goodie bags because we're snowed in and she's terrified of the snow so she's a bit stressed too. What should I do?

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. She is likely experiencing dietary indiscretion from eating the treats. You can stop giving the treats to see if her runny stools improve. If these continue, I recommend that you have Dubh evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

It looks there may be something in Cora's poop that she has eaten, maybe some string or part of a toy. Keep an eye on her. If her poop continues to look like that, or she shows signs of illness such as vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, or lethargy, take her into the vet. Best of luck.

If you are seeing runny stools or Jullie is having accidents in the house it is possible she could have some GI upset, internal parasites (such as worms) or an underlying illness. It is best to bring her into the vet so she can be examined and dewormed or treated as needed. Bringing in a sample of her stool to your vet can help them more easily check for common problems. If you are having trouble affording care, asking family members for help, or seeing if there is a lower cost clinic in your area may help.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While adding fiber to the diet can firm up the stool, I do not recommend feeding dry bran to your cat as it can cause constipation. Daisy may be having runny stool due to parasites or inappropriate diet (too many treats, human food, etc) or because she only eats soft food. Because she is a little older, I recommend having her seen by a vet to rule out intestinal inflammation, cancer, and maldigestion. Why does my dog have soft poop when eating soft food and cat treats?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Eating soft food only is not concerning. An occasional cat treat is also not concerning. Soft stools could be from the soft foods- they contain more water- but if the stools are more like diarrhea, I would recommend looking into the cause. There could be a medical reason for diarrhea, like parasites or a digestive issue that needs to be addressed. If he used to eat hard food and now only eats soft I would recommend having a vet look at his teeth to make sure there isn’t something painful going on that’s causing the diet change. My cat has diarrhea sometimes but acts normal. What should I do?

Common causes of diarrhea or loose stools in a young cat include food intolerance, food allergies, intestinal parasites, bacterial or viral gastroenteritis, stress colitis, among a few others. Based on her history, stress from the visit or a change in treats may be the cause. You can try a medication like ProPectalin AntiDiarrheal Gel for Dogs & Cats that has probiotics and a small amount of kao pectate in it - it also tastes good. If the diarrhea/soft stools continue next week, or if Pico starts showing signs of lethargy, inappetence, or straining, I would definitely have her checked out by a vet.
