My cat has diarrhea sometimes but acts normal. What should I do?

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 7 lbs

Hallo. My cat is having diarrhea for a couple of days already. But her stool is not always loose. Only sometime it happen. I didn't change her food. I do give her supplementary food for intestinal urinary tract for the past week. Plus, early this week, she visited another cat and the owner gave her some snacks. Other than that, she is fine, not stress and still play like normal. Can you tell me what's the problem and how can i solve it soon? I can only bring her to the vet next week bcos of exam

Common causes of diarrhea or loose stools in a young cat include food intolerance, food allergies, intestinal parasites, bacterial or viral gastroenteritis, stress colitis, among a few others. Based on her history, stress from the visit or a change in treats may be the cause. You can try a medication like ProPectalin AntiDiarrheal Gel for Dogs & Cats that has probiotics and a small amount of kao pectate in it - it also tastes good. If the diarrhea/soft stools continue next week, or if Pico starts showing signs of lethargy, inappetence, or straining, I would definitely have her checked out by a vet.

Poor girl. There can be many reasons for her diarrhea, including: intestinal parasites (i.e. Hookworms, roundworms, etc), dietary indiscretion (eating something that didn't agree with her stomach), foreign body ingestion or an underlying conditon (i.e. Stress colitis).
If the probiotics don't improve her conditon within 48-72 hrs or if she develops other symptoms, then it's best to have her seen by your vet for a thorough examination and potentially diagnostic tests (i.e. Fecal exam, bloodwork, etc) to find out the cause. In situations where stress can be a cause of the loose stool, a short course of antibiotics, probiotics and a bland diet are successful in normalizing the stool. You can try a bland diet (i.e. Tuna and white rice) in addition to the probiotics that you have already started, to see if that makes a difference. If not then a vet visit is highly recommended. Cat has chronic diarrhea & pees when seeing other animals. What to do?

Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Deworm him if indicated. You can also have the vet collect a sterile urine sample to submit for urinalysis and culture to rule out UTI or stones. In the meantime, try a 24 hour fast followed by a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with one tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount. Feed bland until the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet. Consider a veterinary probiotic, such as FortiFlora, ProViable or ProStora, to promote gut health. A pheromone product such as Feliway spray or plug in diffuser may decrease any anxiety. A small animal repellant along the border of your property will keep strange animals away and out of sight. Thoroughly clean soiled areas using an enzymatic cleaner such as Nature's Miracle.

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. She is likely experiencing dietary indiscretion from eating the treats. You can stop giving the treats to see if her runny stools improve. If these continue, I recommend that you have Dubh evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Healthy cats: one has diarrhea & poops, other is picky. What to do?

It's possible the cat having diarrhea is having some sort of food allergy, or it could be stress related. Changing the diet or attempting a food trial with your veterinarian may help rule out any potential allergies and help relieve the diarrhea if there were no parasites or illness present. Reducing stress may also help, and adding in a pheromone diffuser in shared rooms can help with reducing stress along with making sure each cat has their own access to the litter box, food, water, etc without competition (that could lead to stress or accidents outside the litter box). As for your picky eater, switching foods may also encourage them to try a little more.

Why is my cat's poop loose and light-colored for over a week?

Sometimes even a simple diet switch from one food to another is enough to cause intestinal inflammation or bacterial imbalance and diarrhea in cats. Though his risk is low, it's also possible he could have an intestinal parasite (cannot be ruled out without a fecal test). You can try adding one tbsp of canned pumpkin to his diet for fiber. If he does not improve soon, it would be best to take him to a vet. Sometimes a short course of medication is necessary to resolve this type of diarrhea.

My anxious cat has loose stool. What food is best for her sensitive stomach?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding PJ. You can consider a diet change. If she is a high anxiety kitty, I like Royal Canin Veterinary Diets Calm. It is an anti-anxiety food. You could also add a probiotic such as Fortiflora or Proviable to help with her digestive health. If all of these changes do not help, then I would recommend further testing. There is a parasite known as Tritrichomonas in cats that will cause soft stool. She may also require a blood panel specific to GI disorders. It measures two pancreatic values as well as cobalamin and folate levels. I hope this information helps!

Diarrhea can be due to stress however, in a young cat/kitten the most likely reason for diarrhea is intestinal parasites (worms). I suggest you have a fecal test done at your vet's office to check her for worms.
