My adopted cat has runny eyes, nose, soft stool, and blood in it?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Billy! I think the eye and the bloody stool are 2 separate things. The most common cause of increased blinking of the eye (from pain) is from herpes viral infections. Almost all cats have been exposed. They can either clear the virus, become chronically infected (chronic nasal discharge and congestion and/or chronic eye issues) or they become carriers and have eye or nasal flare ups with stress. Being a foster and going to a new home is stressful and likely is causing a flare up. We treat the eye with ointment antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infections. The eye usually improves in a week or so. Possible causes of the bloody diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, pancreatitis, new environment (stress) or a food allergy or intolerance. I recommend having Billy evaluated by a Vet to have his eye treated and medications for his bloody stool. Bring a stool sample to have tested for parasites. You can also start a probiotic, I like Purina Fortiflora. I hope this helps and I wish Billy a speedy recovery!

Poor Boi! It sounds like he may have a few things going on, including a possible upper respiratory infection and possibly some internal parasites causing his diarrhea. Both of these are very common in cats adopted from shelter or rescue situations, and stress/change can certainly make it worse. If both eyes are affected to the point of swelling shut and he's very congested/feverish, it is best to seek veterinary care for a full exam and for any antibiotics as needed- plus you can bring in a sample of his stool to check for parasites and have those treated at the same time. Until you can get into the vet, using a warm wet washcloth to remove any discharge and debris from the nose and eyes and keeping him eating and drinking can help some.

Thanks for adopting Eli. Blood in the stool without constipation is often due to intestinal parasites. Please take a sample to your veterinarian and they will look under the microscope for parasite eggs. If they find some they will prescribe the correct dewormer for Eli. If there are no parasites and this continues Eli should go in for an exam. He could have an anal infection, rectal polyp or intestinal inflammation causing the blood. Cats do have blood in the stool more often than other animals so if he's normal and this only happens once in a while I would just keep an eye on him, and bring him in if it is a constant issue. Hello. It sounds like Samson has an upper respiratory virus that he was incubating, & the stress of moving into a new home with unfamiliar sights, sounds & people has impacted his immune system resulting in clinical signs. I cannot say if this is a watch & see situation. Often the symptoms of a mild upper respiratory infection will go away in a few weeks. But if he is not eating nor acting well, he may need medications to get over this. If you are concerned, it is always best to have Samson evaluated before he gets into a more difficult situation. A lot of cats have viral infections such as influenza, herpes and calici, that come and go. They hide in the system and recur usually in times of stress. The move has likely caused a virus to reemerge. It should clear up by itself but if she becomes very unwell it would be worth a vet visit. The initial viral stage has likely caused a high temperature which could be putting her off food.

This may be a symptom of an upper respiratory infection, typically herpes. Most cats are exposed to the viruses that cause URI and flare ups are quite common, especially in rescue cats that get stressed. I have attached a link regarding URI in cats for more info. Congratulations! It is good you brought a stool sample in. Some worms do not shed eggs often and do not respond to routine dewormers so I would put in the back of my mind that he may need a thorough stool panel done at a reference lab. Other thoughts include: stress colitis (especially if Onyx came to you very recently!), diet changes, bacterial overgrowth (typically respond to antibiotics and probiotics), and irritable bowel syndrome. I would ask your vet about basic diarrhea treatments and if that does not help, then I would want to pursue bloodwork and a send out stool panel. If you still do not get an answer I would consider imaging like an ultrasound. I hope this helps and that Onyx is better soon!
