Why is my adopted cat still having bloody diarrhea after a negative test?

Stray cats can pretty nasty parasitic infections. I would check to see if the vet ran a fecal examination + a Giardia test. Both of these can pick up on many parasites that can cause persistent diarrhea. However, if these tests were already done and were negative, then additional testing may be needed to find other not so common causes of diarrhea like the one ran by Idexx. I would suggest going back to the vet for additional treatment and these additional tests if not done already.

I am sorry to hear about your kitty! With blood present I think it is time for a vet exam (and bring a stool sample along). We can have intestinal parasites that are not treated by dewormer (such as Coccidia and Giardia). We can also have things like colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, or food allergy cause these issues. The vet can examine your kitty and based on the exam and history make recommendations and possible test and treatment options.

Thanks for adopting Eli. Blood in the stool without constipation is often due to intestinal parasites. Please take a sample to your veterinarian and they will look under the microscope for parasite eggs. If they find some they will prescribe the correct dewormer for Eli. If there are no parasites and this continues Eli should go in for an exam. He could have an anal infection, rectal polyp or intestinal inflammation causing the blood. Cats do have blood in the stool more often than other animals so if he's normal and this only happens once in a while I would just keep an eye on him, and bring him in if it is a constant issue. The diarrhea could be caused by a number of things, including parasites, diet changes (such as the new diet you tried her on), toxin ingestion, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, food sensitivity/allergy, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin, and Panacur is generally used to treat intestinal worms, so I think there may be some confusion or miscommunication going on as to what is going on with Belle. I recommend you contact the shelter and clarify Belle's diagnosis with them, obtain her medical records, and have her seen by a vet for further diagnostics and treatment. Take in a fecal sample from Belle when you go to the vet so they can test it for parasites if needed. Good luck, and I hope she feels better soon!

Certain liver and pancreatic conditions can cause this, as well as intestinal inflammation. Additional tests I recommend are pancreatic and liver function tests, bloodwork to determine nutrient absorption by the intestines, x-rays, and even an ultrasound. The most aggressive diagnostic would be an exploratory surgery with biopsies. You can talk to your vet also about changing your cat’s diet and adding probiotics. That is a very difficult situation. You may talk to your vet about treating for giardia (even if the test was negative), IBD, food allergies, an aggressive dewormer, running a GI panel, or referral to a specialist in internal medicine. The next step may be biopsies through exploratory surgery or endoscopy. Many cats with diarrhea of unknown cause will respond to a prescription hypoallergenic diet.

Hi. It may be a parasite that isn't picked up on a regular fecal sample. You may need to have a fecal culture done. These more specified tests will check for things like cryptosporidum, c. Diff, salmonella, campylobacter, etc. It may also be a viral infection of some kind that isn't picked up on fecal or blood. I think you should talk to your veterinarian about making sure all 6 pets are treated at the same time, and that the environment is fully cleaned and decontaminated.
