Why won't my cat eat new grain-free food and squats by her bowl?

Hi there! I'm glad to see that Artemis is doing a little bit better. You may not see feces in the litter box for a few days after she starts to eat again, so I wouldn't be too worried about that. I'd watch her when she goes to the bathroom and look for any straining or discomfort, that may indicate that maybe she does have diarrhea, or even constipation. I usually will encourage owners to try a variety of foods for a cat that isn't eating. As long as there isn't a specific reason your veterinarian recommends baby food only, I would try brands like weruva (especially the seafood bits - for some reason I see cats that refuse just about everything eat that), and tiki cat. They are usually very palatable. The only thing you can really do is keep trying different foods. If your veterinarian hasn't prescribed anything yet, there are a few medications for cats that can help with appetite stimulation. Sometimes too, if it's a multiple cat household, if the ill cat isn't that attached to the other cats, and essentially just coexists, I recommend giving the ill cat some time for itself. Maybe set him up in his own area where he has his own litter box, and maybe a feliway diffuser, some rescue remedy, and/or catnip. Offer him fresh portions of a variety of foods a few times a day. You may just monitor at this point. Eevee may end up with an upset stomach from eating feces and then again, she could be fine. You could feed her a diet of boiled white meat chicken and plain boiled white rice for the next 24 hrs if she will eat it (cats can be picky). As long as the cats are worm free, you don’t have to worry about anything being transmitted. Figure out who is pooping outside the box as this can be either behavioral or medical. As far as feeding, offer her a variety of wet and dry foods. If she fails to eat within 48 hours, you should take her back to your veterinarian. Ask about an appetite stimulant.

Sometimes cats will attempt to cover their food like this when they are no longer interested in eating. I would try to keep a very close eye on exactly how much she is eating to make sure her appetite is not decreased. If the cat poop has litter on it I agree that Mia is likely the culprit. Sometimes cats will also get feces stuck to the hair around the rectum and it can later fall off - you could examine her rear end after she leaves the box to see if this is the case.

Nugget and her babies are so cute! It's not likely she is being spiteful but she could be having stress or a medical condition. When pet's stop using the litter box, this can indicate pain or a problem in the bladder or colon. Since Nugget can't talk and tell you why this is happening, I recommend to play it safe and have her examined by the veterinarian. Cats, unlike dogs can eat only meat and be fine, as they are obligate carnivores. Dogs can actually be fed a vegetarian diet but cats cannot. If she was doing well on the previous food then transition her back if you want, or you can give her a little more time to get used to the new diet. You could even transition her to a completely canned diet. If you changed her abruptly from one to the other, that could be what started her problems, especially if she has a sensitive stomach. Since she's eating fine I don't think you need to rush her to the vet just yet, as long as she seems well otherwise. Decide what food you want to feed her long-term and transition her slowly from her current diet by offering her some of each dry food in two separate bowls for a few days. Then put 75% old food/25% new food in the bowl together for a few days. Then go to 50%/50%, then 25%/75%, taking a few days each time. Gradually reduce the amount of old food until she is completely fed the new dry food. If she gets an upset stomach, you can back up a step and hold there until she feels better. If she loses her appetite, starts vomiting, becomes lethargic, then do get her in to see your vet as soon as you can.

I'm sorry Bonnie isn't doing well at the moment! Cats can be picky about their food, and she may not like this new brand of food even though it has salmon as the first ingredient. It will still be a different formulation of food, and the taste may not appear to her. It could also be that she is sick, and that is causing her to not eat. Anorexia is a very general sign of illness in cats, and it can by caused by systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. I recommend having Bonnie seen by a vet for a health check to rule out a medical cause behind her not eating.
