My cat is acting strange after having kittens. Is she sick or stressed?

If she recently had kittens, her nipples may feel more plump than they typically would, since she may have residual milk in there that needs to resorb or they may still be swollen from being recently suckled on by her kittens. If she truly has not urinated in 24 hours, I would be concerned. I would check around your house for any spots, as she may have urinated outside of the litter box, since this is a new home for her. Stress can slow cat's GI tracts, so she may not defecate for a few days. As long as she is acting normally and has a good appetite and is drinking water, I would continue to monitor her at home. If she ever becomes excessively lethargic, or loses her appetite, or vomits or has diarrhea, I would have her evaluated by your veterinarian. You could try confining her to a smaller area for a day or so to make sure she is urinating. I hope this is helpful!

Your cat may be reluctant to leave her new kittens so you could try moving the litter box a little closer to her so she can use it, but still see her kittens. It may take her awhile to go since she has just gone through a major ordeal. If she hasn't used the litter box by tomorrow, or if she stops eating, I would recommend taking her (and her kittens) to the vet to be checked out. Good luck.

If she is vomiting so frequently, she may have an issue with her stomach or intestines. This could be something as simple as a dietary intolerance, or could be as scary as cancer. Poor Nugget probably has a sore and inflamed little anus from her issues last week. If she's had any issues with diarrhea or straining in the litterbox, then she may need to see a vet for the proper diagnosis and medication. She could need a food change, or probiotics added to her diet, or just simply to be dewormed. Hope that helps!

Hello, sorry to hear about Lorna. Its unlikely to be an emergency but she may not be feeling like her normal self and may have an upset stomach. I would recommend having her evaluated by her veterinarian. If you note however that she is not eating, develops vomiting or lethargy then she should be evaluated sooner. If everything comes back normal, then it is likely that the issue is behavioral. Having accidents like this is often a stress or anxiety-related behavior in cats - if there have been any recent changes in the household, such as a new pet or a new baby, a move to a new house, or a guest staying with you, these could all be reasons for him to be pottying in inappropriate places. There may also be something about the litter box that he finds objectionable - he may not like the type of litter provided, or the location of the box. It can sometimes take some detective work to pinpoint the problem in cases like this, so if you're still stumped, I would consider making an appointment with a veterinary behaviorist - he/she can meet your cat in person and do an in-depth evaluation to help diagnose the problem and develop a plan to treat it. In the meantime, you can try a Feliway diffuser in the house or a natural calming supplement such as Composure to see if this helps.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she is eating she will eventually urinate and poop. Be sure the litter box isn't too far from where she is with the kittens. Consider bringing it in the room where she is, but put it far enough away from her and the food. The loud stomach noises could just be gas moving through the intestines, they were cramped by growing kittens for 2 months. But watch closely for any vomiting or diarrhea from Lily. As long as she is eating and she used the litter box today I wouldn't worry right now. Good luck!
