My cat's red, swollen, dry bottom: Is Vaseline safe until the vet?

Poor kitty. It looks like his rectum is trying to prolapse. I would definitely recommend putting some Vaseline on it for tonight and then if it is still protruding by tomorrow, get Smokey seen by your vet for further care. Best of luck with Smokey moving forward. Take care.

As long as the bleeding has stopped, it can wait until the morning. If the bleeding won't stop, he's pretty distressed, or appears lethargic and in pain, take him into an ER vet. I hope this helps!

I agree with you. The top of the anus does look swollen. I do not know what from. He needs an exam in person from your vet. In the meantime you can just apply a thin layer of Neosporin to the affected area to hopefully soothe him.

Hello! That bump looks a little swollen and red, and it could simply be a wound. I would clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap, and keep an eye on it. If the swelling gets larger, Chiky starts having trouble passing feces, she starts scooting on her behind, licking the area a lot, and/or you see pus, then I would take her into the vet. In that case, I would be concerned that the wound may be infected, or it could be something else causing the swelling such as infected and impacted anal sacs or intestinal worms. Sure you could use vaseline to help soften the debris or warm water and soap work well too. If it becomes a chronic problem some older kitties benefit from a a sanitary clip (especially if long haired) to keep the hair shorter in this area so fecal material has less to stick too. I see what you mean about Moog's sore. I would gently clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it.
