My cat's rectum is protruding. Can I put Vaseline on it?

Poor Roe! I agree, the pictures do look consistent with a rectal prolapse. If at all possible, try to find an emergency vet or a vet on call for after hours emergencies in your area for more urgent care, as it sounds as though Roe is uncomfortable based on his behavior. If there are vets available in your area, you can try to put an e-collar (cone) on Roe until you can get to the vet in the morning. This will prevent him from licking or chewing any prolapsed tissue, as this would make matters worse. You can also apply some water based lubricants (such as KY jelly) to the prolapsed tissue to prevent it from drying out. I hope that all goes well.

If your cat has a prolapsed rectum it needs to be reinserted. If you do this at home it will likely come right back out. Typically these need to be reinserted under anesthesia and a purse string suture placed around the rectum to keep it in. I wish there was more you could do at home but unfortunately this is one of those things that needs to be done by a vet. Good luck.

Poor Bruno! I agree that it sounds like he needs to see a vet as soon as you're able to take him. In the meantime, it should be okay to use a small amount of Vaseline on the inflamed area to help keep it from drying out and becoming irritated. You may also need to place an e-collar (plastic cone) on Bruno to keep him from licking it until you're able to see the vet, as this will only make the inflammation worse.

Hi there. Smokey likely needs a fecal exam at your local veterinarian to test for intestinal parasites. This is very common in small kittens-but upon presenting with a prolapsed anus it becomes more serious. Best to be seen as soon as possible. Hope this helps!

You can try to ease it out. Use some vaseline and gently massage the outside of the rectum to stimulate her. If this doesn't work, then visit your vet to have some help here; however, unless it is stuck to hair it should come out on its own. I can't tell exactly what is goin on from the picture. If the rectum is actually prolapsed (like a little tube sticking out) then Blaze really needs medical attention. If it is just swollen and irritated, then the best you can do is to keep it clean with a wet wash cloth. This problem is often associated with diarrhea. The straining during diarrhea can push the colon out, and it will not heal normally without curing the diarrhea. If the prolapse does not resolve on its own, the pet may need surgery. I would recommend that you have Sweetums examined by the vet. You have described a rectal prolapse, which can be caused by intestinal parasites, irritable bowel disease, diarrhea or constipation, etc. Some pets with chronic rectal prolapse require a surgery to tack the colon to the body wall to keep it in place. If it prolapses too long, it can become ulcerated or infected, which would require surgery to remove the affected portion.
