My cat has a red crusty sore on his head that's getting bigger. What is it?

Oh goodness! Poor Gizmo! Often looking under the microscope at a quick smear of the fluid from the lesion can give your veterinarian a good idea if eosinophilic complex is possible. If the cells do not support that diagnosis then a biopsy may be recommended. Often these lesions also have a secondary infection so often I use antibiotics as well as steroids to resolve the lesions. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If the sores are getting bigger I would recommend having Gotti seem by a veterinarian. It appears that he may have a skin infection. Keep the lesions clean and dry until then, but he may need some antibiotics. You can use a mild antiseptic shampoo to clean the lesions but be sure to rinse well.

Based on the images provided, it appears that there is a cyst / wart like skin mass on the head. If this keeps bleeding and opening up, I would recommend having it removed by a veterinarian in the near future. I would schedule an appointment with a veterinarian and have an exam done to evaluate this problem to plan appropriately. I hope this helps!

It's difficult to compare the size of the area in the 2 pictures, but if the area is getting larger, then I would certainly recommend having your veterinarian examine Muffin. The best way for us to decide how to treat skin problems is to do some simple skin tests and examine a sample under the microscope. That will determine if there is a bacterial infection, fungal infection, yeast infection or even a parasitic infection like mites. I wish I could give you an answer by just looking at the picture, but since Bacitracin isn't working it's time for some additional testing to figure out what is going on. Good luck! Ouch poor Ki! This looks like it could have started out as a small wound, bite, or scratch but eventually turned into an abscess which is why it is so much bigger now. Since it is getting worse and she is bothered by it, I️ would take her to your vet. She is likely going to need some medical care to clean it up and make sure she doesn’t need stitches. Also your vet will be able to provide her with some systemic antibiotics as I don’t believe that ointment is strong enough. I hope this helps!

Judging from the pictures you have provided, this could be a bacterial skin infection or ringworm. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. The sooner this is looked at the faster the resolution. I am very sorry that Kitty has his sore near her lip. Thank you for proving pictures, it is difficult to know precisely what caused this lesion it may have been a cat scratch, a traumatic puncture from for example a fence, or possible a primary skin like feline acne, or allergic disease. At this stage it appears to be slightly crusted and inflamed and I would suggest a trip to the veterinarian. The vet will most likely clean the wound and debris any necrotic material. The vet may also send home pain relief, anti inflammatory medications and / or antibiotics. The vet will also be able examine the area and reach a diagnosis.
