Is recurring red-brown eye discharge normal for my new cat?

As long as it is black or clear and not green or yellow, this is considered to be a normal weepy eye. This can be caused by a slight increase in tear production and should be wiped clean with a warm wet cloth daily or as needed to prevent further irritation of the skin due to build up. Some eye discharge and tear staining can be normal, especially in white or other light-furred colors that will show the stain more easily. A dark colored discharge is completely normal and is just what accumulates near the corner of the eye. It consists of the dried discharge left from the tear film that gets deposited onto the eye and flows across the eye. Unless you notice redness and a green or yellowish discharge I wouldn't worry. A clear discharge with a lot of squinting and redness would be something to have your vet evaluate right away. Sounds like this is completely normal and is found in both normal cats and dogs. Good job treating the conjunctivitis, sounds like it has resolved.

This can be a pretty normal thing. Cats have a normal staining in their saliva and tears that can look brownish when dried. Not a big deal. I would not be overly concerned unless it becomes excessive or he seems to have other problems with the eyes. I suggest you use these eye wipes when cleaning the eyes although there is nothing wrong with using the tissue and warm water as you have been. Hi there, I'm only appreciating a small amount of eye discharge in the photograph, which could be normal after a long nap or sleep, just like in people. If Percy begins to hold his eyes closed, the eye discharge becomes yellow/green/runny, sneezing, coughing, or less interest in food- these would all be signs of a respiratory infection that may require treatment and an exam from your vet. I wouldn't worry too much. If she is tolerating you wiping it, just clean it as needed with with a warm wet cotton ball. If she is pawing at her eyes or rubbing her face on the ground, or seems to have any other issue going on, call your vet and get her in for an exam. I see many cats like Lottie who have mild brownish eye discharge. Most of the time this is normal. Check Lottie's eyes for any redness on the eye itself or the surround tissues. Watch for any squinting or green/yellow discharge. If you see any of the above signs, it could indicate an infection or scratch on the cornea. Take her to the veterinarian if you suspect something abnormal.
