My cat has recurring diarrhea and a bulged tummy. What's wrong?

She has received a lot of medications and this can upset the normal bacterial balance in the bowel. I would feed boiled chicken or fish plus a probiotic and fiber supplement such as fortiflora exclusively for 7-10days to allow the bowel to rest and recuperate. Investigation for chronic inflammatory conditions may be required if persisting

Poor girl. It sounds like she has a chronic intestinal problem that requires chronic use of medication. I think we need to investigate further what the underyling problem is so that we have a better idea here. Many diseases can cause the symptoms we are seeing with Touta such as Pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, malabsorption disease, or even lymphoma jsut to name a few. The next best step would be to do an abdominal ultrasound on her to get a better look. Also bloodwork analysis would be best to do as well to get an idea of her overall health. In the meantime, continue giving her her medication since it does seem to stabilize her well. I would also consider getting her on a prescription diet food for gastrointestinal problems such as Royal Canin Selected Protein PR https://www.royalcanin.com/us/dogs/products/vet-products/canine-selected-protein-adult-pr-dry-dog-food Prescription diets are best when dealing with chronic disease in pets. Alfie could have a parasite, infection, inflammatory bowel disease, hyperthyroidism, liver/kidney disease, etc. Since it has been a week, it would be a good idea to have full blood work, fecal test, and x-rays done to rule out potential causes. I would also recommend switching to a hypoallergenic diet, like d/d, and see if that helps. A medication called Proviable KP may also help. If your vet didn't already prescribe Metronidazole (Flagyl) than that could be tried, too. If the diarrhea persists than an intestinal biopsy may be needed.

Hello and thank you for your post! The bacterial overgrowth was not very high, which is good. If the stool is not improving or got better and is getting worse off of antibiotics, I would consider going through a second round of antibiotics (with a potentially different antibiotic) and for a longer period of time. Some antibiotics that I use for the intestinal overgrowth is Metronidazole and Tylosin. These antibiotics I've had quite a good track record of getting these diarrhea cases to resolve. Another possibility is that the food (C/D) may be causing the soft smelly stool. You might consider switching to Royal Canin SO as an alternative option. Please don't waste your money on those expensive grain free foods. They are not necessary to use except in extreme cases of an actual diagnosed grain allergy which is rare. Grain free diets are now linked to causing heart disease in dogs (we are not sure yet about cats). I recommend you discontinue use of that type of food. My suggestion would be to use a long term course of a probiotic called Fortiflora. Put one packet on his food every day for at least one month. This will help correct any imbalance in good vs bad intestinal bacteria. DO NOT use human probiotics or things like yogurt. Fortiflora is the best in my opinion and it is palatable so cats like to eat it. I can't tell you what your cat is suffering from but obviously your cat has a gastrointestinal problem, i'm a little surprised that all the vet gave was Cerenia, i would definitely add an antibiotic course and a special food for a few day. it seems as now your cat can't poop, if this is the case i would start suspecting an intestinal blockage. i would advise having an ultrasound done, if possible by a specialist in order to find out what is wrong as an xray can miss a lot of conditions in the abdominal cavity and intestines.

I would add in a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora and I would get a prescription intestinal diet form you Vet like Hill's i/d. It isn't wrong to deworm her again despite the negative stool sample since she was so infested with worms. Hopefully those 3 things in combination will nip the diarrhea. Good luck!
