What to do for cat chronic diarrhea, no appetite, stomach pain?

Ercefuryl is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial overgrowth in the bowel - where bacteria develop too quickly due to poor balance of good bacteria/pH/undigested food, they then ferment the food preventing normal digestion and producing a foul, often gassy diarrhoea. It can be helpful to transition to a highly digestible diet such as royal canin hypoallergenic or gastrointestinal, as well as adding probiotics and some additional fibre to promote the good bacteria in the bowel. Pancreatic enzyme supplements can also help imrpove digestion and allow the bowel to recover. Some patients also develop an inflammatory bowel reaction also and may require natiinflammatory medications also. Biopsies and blood tests for b vitamin levels can also be helpful if cases which do not respond

If these cats have not been on long-term medication like probiotics and metronidazole, I would start these. Also, all cats might benefit from a food-allergy diet trial like Hills z/d fed exclusively for 8-10 weeks. This helps to rule out food allergies as a cause for chronic diarrhea. If these things don't work, you may have to actually send out fecal tests for culture and sensitivity to have done at an outside laboratory as most vet clinics are only equipped to do basic parasite fecal floats and smears in-house. Your female who is having behavior issues may benefit from anti-anxiety medications like Zylkene or Lorazepam, or even an anti-depressant. Since all three are young cats, it's most likely that they are sharing a parasitic or other intestinal infection that is causing chronic diarrhea, so I think you are on the right tract to continue to monitor for coccidiosis and giardiasis. Chronic diarrhea in an older cat with vomiting can be a sign of an inflammatory bowel disease or intestinal cancer. The only way to differentiate between the two disease is a surgery to take biopsies of the intestines and have them analyzed. Based on the diagnosis, the diet may be changed or vitamin supplements or steroids may be added to manage her symptoms. They will check for parasite and check her labs for any renal or endocrine disease

HI there. So sorry Onyx is having this issue. If those medications are not working I would be worried about the possibility of something else going at. She may not have IBS at all. My suggestion would be to get some intestinal biopsies so you can have a definitive diagnosis. Without a diagnosis all your vet is doing is guessing as to what may be wrong. These signs might be compatible with a pancreatic disease (usually an inflammation). Often gastrointestinal inflammation is associated as well. Unfortunately pain killers would be required. Please don't waste your money on those expensive grain free foods. They are not necessary to use except in extreme cases of an actual diagnosed grain allergy which is rare. Grain free diets are now linked to causing heart disease in dogs (we are not sure yet about cats). I recommend you discontinue use of that type of food. My suggestion would be to use a long term course of a probiotic called Fortiflora. Put one packet on his food every day for at least one month.
