Cat hates me, loves dad. How to fix cat behavior at home without meds?

HI, thanks for using PetCoach! Adorable pictures! Cats are funny things and sometimes they react this way because they are anticipating a negative interaction with you. Cats hold grunges. And sometimes we do not even know we are doing anything wrong. I would keep him out of your room. If that is the territory he is claiming control over, prevent access. I would put a feliway diffuser in your room and right outside your room. I would limit the tight snuggling as most cats do not like that despite appearing to. I would only pet him when he comes to you. Only pet around his face and neck and as soon as he starts to flick his tail or turn his ears, stop. Give him treats during these brief petting sessions. After a few weeks to a month of non aggressive snuggling and petting if there are no aggressive tendencies open your room back up to him. The first thing I would do would be to rule out a medical condition. Conditions such as hyperthyroidism and urinary tract infections can sometimes manifest as aggression. If your veterinarians determines that everything is normal, I would recommend a product called Feliway which can be used to calm cats. It can be purchased over the counter at any pet store or online.

You can start with Feliway spray and diffusers as this can help with areas and anxiety. If that is no help they do offer prescription anxiety medications and natural calming treats. All are variable based on the patient so you may have to try 1-2 before you find what works best. It is best to talk to your vet to see which prescription is best

Ideally, I would strongly recommend getting in touch with a veterinary behaviorist who can evaluate her in person and help you put together a detailed treatment plan for her, including medication if he/she feels that it would be helpful in Sunny's case. You will indeed need to have her seen for an exam in order to start any prescription medication - so you'll need to bring her into the clinic, or you can see if there are any vets in your area who offer housecall services. You can ask your veterinarian about using a calming supplement such as Anxitane or Zylkene before the visit to help make her a bit more comfortable, if needed.

I suggest you try some Feliway diffusers and some environmental enrichment for them. You can refer to the links below. Feliway is like "happy cat" pheromones and really helps to calm cats down. Poor Puss. It sounds like he is very stressed. I have a couple of suggestions that you can try at home, but I suspect you may need to get your veterinarian involved and utilize some medication if Puss is that stressed. One option for decreasing stress is to add a Feliway Diffuser ( https://www.feliway.com/us#redirected ) to your house. This is a calming pheromone that will work for a month and may be beneficial for both cats. I have also had luck with Rescue Remedy ( http://www.bachflower.com/rescue-remedy-pet/ ) which can be added to the water and will be safe for both cats. What may have happened this morning is something called displaced or redirected aggression. Something that stresses Puss out can cause him to lash out at something else (like your dad). Simply the smell of your other cat may have caused that type of reaction.
