My cat's popped tail abscess isn't healing after 3 days. What to do?

Hello. Without a further exam & cytology of the discharge it is impossible to say what might be going on, but at the very least, Nomar should probably receive another round of antibiotics. Until you can contact your vet, keep the area clean by using an antibacterial skin cleaner like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ) a couple of times a day. This looks like is may be a bite wound abscess that ruptured. Ideally, it should be addressed by your veterinarian. Surgery may be indicated to clean and flush the wound. Antibiotics and pain medication may also be indicated. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking until he sees the doctor. You may need to confine him indoors until he is healed.

Hello. There may have been a very small nidus of infection that remained after the first infection. Marley may need another round of antibiotics, but waiting until Friday should not be too problematic. It looks like Izzy has an abscess. In that location it is usually due to a bite from another cat. It is actually good that it burst open. It may heal now if you keep it clean (1:10 dilution of Betadine solution to water) and apply Neosporin ointment to it. However, often times once it seals closed the infection will return. More often that not cats need antibiotics to get these to heal completely. So, my suggestion would be to get her to your vet for an exam and some antibiotics. If you want to try to keep it clean and treat it at home you can try that but if it appears to heal and then comes back she will need to see your vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Oh my. Poor kitty. It seems this area needs to be cultured to see what kind of antibiotic will rid this infection for sure, or at the very least another class of antibiotic (i.e. fluoroquinolone) should be tried here. I would also not cover this for the future, to give it a chance to breathe an heal well. The area should also be investigated while Mickey is sedated to ensure there is no foreign body material underneath the skin that could be a source of chronic infection. If there is foreign material there, then it needs to be removed first in order for it to heal well. I hope this helps and best wishes with your kitty Mickey moving forward! Take care. : )

Poor girl. It really likely just needs some antibiotics to fully heal here. If a cut gets infected, then it will delay the healing process. I would suggest cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water for now and then get this seen by your vet b/c she likely just needs antibiotics and potentially even closure of the cut to help it heal all the way. She also is likely messing with it b/c it is itchy due to infection. You can place an e-collar on her for now to keep her from getting to the wound. You can find e-collars at your local petstore.
