My cat's previous abscess site is swollen and blue. Should I worry?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Pussy Cat! I recommend having him rechecked as soon as possible. My worry is that the bite wound is now a closed abscess and needs to be lanced so it can drain. Antibiotics have a hard time penetrating a puss filled pocket. I would not recommend waiting a week. It looks like there is possibly an abscess that is about to rupture. If there is an abscess (pus pocket), then if you warm compress it for 5-10 minutes several times a day then it may drain soon, which will make him feel better. Hello. It is not unusual for a secondary abscess to show up days later. It may have resulted from a draining tract from the first, or another incident similar to what caused the first abscess. Since the new abscess seems to be drying up & Yum Yum is ( hopefully ) on antibiotics, waiting until Friday to see the vet should be OK. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is indeed most likely due to the abscess. I would be suspicious that some of that pus and inflammation has migrated to the leg and is causing pain as well. At this point I think this may be require more investigation into the underlying cause of the abscess. I would be suspicious of foreign material that has migrated and is underneath the skin. If that is the case, surgery and possibly further diagnostics like a CT scan as well as long courses of antibiotics may be needed to treat this appropriately. A culture of this wound should be obtained if that has not been done to make sure that the correct antibiotic is used. I recommend that you have Spock reevaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

Poor Marley! If he only received an anti-inflammatory injection, he may need an antibiotic. However, if he did receive an antibiotic, it may be that he needs to have the area cleaned and flushed to get the debris out. Sometimes cats have to be sedated to have this done. It helps to remove the infection and allow the area to heal faster. I would recommend taking Marley in to your vet to have the area rechecked to make sure nothing else needs to be done. Also, if he doesn't have an e-collar, I would recommend one, as often cats can groom these infected areas and delay their healing. I hope he is back on track and feeling good soon!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cat. She will need to see her veterinarian to have the swelling evaluated. It is likely another abscess. She will need to have it lanced to allow the infection to drain out. She will need oral antibiotics as well. I hope this information helps!

Hello. Without a further exam & cytology of the discharge it is impossible to say what might be going on, but at the very least, Nomar should probably receive another round of antibiotics. Until you can contact your vet, keep the area clean by using an antibacterial skin cleaner like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ) a couple of times a day. You may need to put an Elizabethan cone on him to keep him from disturbing the wound. Hopefully, he will heal very quickly & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
