My cat picked a bump and it's oozing. Is it infected? What to do?

Hi I'm Leah and my cat Shadow has this bump I just left it alone but then he picked it off and now it's oozing something and I'm afraid it's something that's deadly I don't know but if u can help I'll be thankful! Plus I put medicine on it

The area on Leah definitely looks pretty angry and infected. Here's what I would recommend doing. You can either go to the vet and let them take care of this for you, or you can try the following first on your own if he'll let you:
-Clip the hair on and around the affected lesion
-Scrub the lesion with dilute betadine or chlorhexidine solution repeatedly to disinfect the region. Do not use peroxide as it will delay the healing process
-Obtain topical ointments such as triple antibiotic and something with a steroid to help address the itchiness and inflammation
-Obtain an e-collar (Cone) to help prevent any additional self-inflicted trauma that Shadow will try to cause
-If matters do not seem to be heading in the right direction within the next couple days, seek veterinary attention. If at any time things are worsening, do not hesitate to go sooner.

Hope this helps. And while I can't be sure, I don't think you need to fear that Shadow is going to die! It looks like a simple skin infection. Hope this puts you a little bit at ease!

You can clean the area with hydrogen peroxide. I would then take a hot wet washcloth and massage the area. The heat and massage will improve the blood supply to the area so it will heal more quickly. If she becomes lethargic and not eating then I would bring her in for an exam as she may have a fever and need antibiotics. My cat has a swollen, leaking bump under its jaw. Is it infected?

This is likely to be an abscess that bursts open. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching (if any). If not resolving in 4 days a check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. My cat's cheek bump popped, gunk came out. Is it a zit or serious?

That is very oddly discolored gunk for sure. I would certainly clip (if you're able) around the area to see if it looks infected or can be kept clean at home (clean washcloth, Elizabethan collar to prevent pawing at or licking it, keeping the area trimmed and dry). If Gremlin won't let you look at it or clean it properly, more discharge is coming from it, or it's very large/rapidly changing in size, a vet visit is a good idea. They can safely clip back any hair to make sure there aren't other pockets of infection, can clean the area, and may suggest taking samples if they suspect something more than a clogged pore or minor abscess.

My cat has an oozing bump after a fight. Can I treat it at home?

Hi there, and thanks for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like Sophia is likely developing an abscess, which is a focal internal infection - the timing makes sense if she was in a fight 3 days ago.. If so, a topical product such as Neosporin won't help - she would need systemic antibiotics, either given orally or as an injection. I recommend having her seen by your vet so she gets the appropriate treatment. In the meantime, keep the area clean by gently washing it twice daily with soapy water. You can use a gentle dish soap such as Dawn. Hope this helps.

Why does my cat have a recurring infected chin lump with hair loss?

Hi and thanks for your question this morning. From the picture, it looks like a puncture wound or bite wound that has become infected although it could be other skin issues like a fungal infection, parasitic infection, or a bad bacterial infection. Keep the area clean with a mild cleansing cloth a few times daily or 3% hydrogen peroxide on the wound until you can take Snowie into your veterinarian- snowie may need to have fungal or bacterial culture done on the wound and may need to be on antibiotics or another medication for a while. I hope she has a speedy recovery!

My cat has a scabby bump on its back that oozes pus. What is it?

I'm glad to hear that Mr. Tibbs does not seem to be bothered by this bump. This lesion could be an abscessed wound, infected mass, infected cyst, etc. Anytime pus is present, this is indicative of white blood cells working to fight infection. I recommend taking Mr. Tibbs to his vet both for a course of antibiotics and to determine the cause of this lesion. He may need to have a needle aspirate performed to draw out a few cells with a needle and then examine them microscopically. Until you can get to the vet, you can try applying warm compresses to this area and be sure to keep an e-collar ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=20390 ) on Mr. Tibbs to prevent him from licking the area, because this will make matters worse. My cat scratched his eye, now has a white bump. Is it an infection? What should I do?

That is an odd bump on Moteur. I think a warm compress twice daily is a good idea. It may be something like a minor infection or perhaps a fluid filled cyst. Make sure to protect it from Moteur scratching at it (make him wear an elizabethan collar if you need to). Given that its so close to his eye, I would be hesitant to try to apply any ointment as I fear he would move and end up getting something in the eye. If that lesion starts to swell, look inflamed, ruptures, or is still there in a month, then I think you should have him examined by his veterinarian. Although it does not look like it is connected to his actual eye, monitor that as well for redness, squinting or excessive tearing. I hope this helps and hopefully that goes away quickly!
