My cat has an oozing bump after a fight. Can I treat it at home?

You can clean the area with hydrogen peroxide. I would then take a hot wet washcloth and massage the area. The heat and massage will improve the blood supply to the area so it will heal more quickly. If there is a pocket of puss the goal is to get the scab off so the infection can drain. If there is an open wound then I would apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it afterwards. If she becomes lethargic and not eating then I would bring her in for an exam as she may have a fever and need antibiotics. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sadly there is nothing else you can do at home besides what has been previously mentioned. If you are very worried, call your local SPCA to see if they offer low cost Veterinary Care. Ideally the abscess needs to be lanced (opened) to allow drainage. We can not recommend that you do this at home. If Bubba doesn't see a Vet the abscess will likely open at some point on it's own. Bite wounds and infections are painful. Sometimes cats feel very sick for a few days before the abscess ruptures because they tend to get a fever. I would just wash the area locally and not give him a full bath. You can see if you can borrow clippers from someone. I hope this helps!

It sounds as though Booboo may have an abscess that is simply not resolving. Abscesses typically require antibiotics for resolution and some also require surgical draining and flushing. At this point, your best bet is to take her to the vet for an exam and to determine if surgery is indicated or if antibiotics alone will be sufficient. I hope that she is on the mend soon!

Hello. If you have or can purchase a skin antiseptic, one with either 2% chlorhexidine or 1% povidine iodine, then you can gently clean this 2 times daily. Antibiotics would hasten healing, & if the wound is not looking better by early next week, I would consider a veterinary visit. But by keeping this clean, it will heal, & yes, this has the look of a typical cat bite abscess, so he did get into an argument with another cat. Hello. Kipsico was bitten probably by another cat, developed an abscess & it has now blown open. If she will let you clean this with warm water & a skin antiseptic like Hibiclens ( available at any pharmacy ), she will be fine until you can have her seen by your vet tomorrow. She will need antibiotics & possibly need to wear a cone to keep her from licking the area, but these things usually heal quite nicely. I recommend that you have Leo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
