Why is my cat peeing and pooping in her sleep, unaware of it?

It sounds like Sassy might be a bit incontinent which could be a sign of a UTI, or even a problem with arthritis (involving spinal nerves that help control the muscles that help hold in the urine/feces. It is also possible that she is so relaxed when she sleeps that all the muscles relax extensively to the point that she is not holding in her eliminations. I suggest you take her to your vet for a general exam to rule out a urinary tract infection or arthritis. If the veterinarian cannot find anything wrong with her he may be able to prescribe a medication that helps with the control of the respective muscles.

If this was a once-time occurence, I wouldn't worry too much. But cat's shouldn't really urinate when they are sleeping. They can develop urinary incontinence which is most evident when they have been laying and there is a small amount of urine when they get up. Sometimes a UTI or other urinary issues can present similarly to incontinence. If you notice the leaking urine continues, then your cat should get checked out by a vet to see what is going on.

It is possible that he has a urinary tract infection, urinary bladder stones, or a tumor in his bladder that is causing this, though often we see urgency to urinate, pain with urination, etc. Its also possible that its a neurologic problem resulting in him not knowing that he's urinating in his sleep. Does he have any other symptoms? Ideally, take him to your vet for an exam. Your vet will probably recommend doing a urinalysis and perhaps some bloodwork. If a cause is found, the treatment is targeted for the cause. If no cause is found, your vet may recommend a prescription that helps him to tighten his urethra (Proin). However, this is a very rare problem to see in male cats; so we would not want to assume that something like that would help if there is an underlying cause. Additionally, to use a mediation like Proin inappropriately could cause a problem with preventing him from urinating when he should. Hi. Poor Zuzu. Usually when kitties defecate, or urinate, outside the box, they are trying to tell us something, if she isn't urinating, that is definitely a concern. Most likely though, she is going somewhere or she would be a lot sicker. I recommend getting her seen as soon as you can. In older kitties, some of the common problems we see include kidney disease, high thyroid, cardiac disease, diabetes, UTI's, or cancers. So in a case like this, blood and urine will help us rule a lot of those out. So to start I recommend an exam and labwork. Good luck

Unfortunately, if there is a medical condition / infection, there is nothing you can do over the counter. You will have to have Nookie seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would confine her to a bathroom or a small room for the time being until you can get her seen by a veterinarian. I hope this helps! Sounds like your cat has something affecting her nervous system and it is pretty severe. He nerves innervate the eyes, influence her stance, her gait and also her mentation (ability to be aware of her surroundings). Several things can affect the nervous system including toxins, chemicals, liver shunts, primary brain stem lesions and tumors, and severe liver disease. I would highly recommend taking her in to your vet for baseline bloodwork and radiographs to start. Her lab work findings will help them pinpoint what is going on with her internally so that you can best help your furry friend. There really isn't much you can do for her at home until you know exactly what is going on with her and then get the vet to prescribe medications to help her condition. I hope she feels better soon.

I wouldn't say this is normal behavior, but it is common for senior dogs to develop fecal incontinence especially when sleeping. Most of the time there is not much to do although sometimes people try a diet change or probiotics. Some neurologic problems could also cause incontinence so if Millie has been having trouble walking or leaking urine I would recommend seeing your vet.
