My cat is peeing blood and outside the box. What can I do now?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Burmese | Male | unneutered | 4 years old

My cat has been peeing outside of his litter box for a while. I thought initially it was a behavioral problem, but today I saw that there was blood in his urine. I made a vet appointment, but the earliest I can get him seen is in a week. Is there anything I can do for him, or anything over the counter I can give him to help until he's been seen?

Hello. I am so sorry for your concerns about Anakin. Peeing out of the box is a frustrating problem, but if it is accompanied by a potential urinary tract infection, this makes things very uncomfortable for your cat. If you can encourage him to drink more fluids, either by offering wet cat food or tuna water ( lower sodium if you can find this ) will help dilute the urine making the process more comfortable for him. I would also see if you can obtain a concentrated cranberry supplement for him at your local pet retailer. We use Cranberry RX here & you might be able to order this online. Just make sure he urinates at least once a day. If he stops urinating, please have him seen on emergency. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
