My cat's paw pads hurt from a fan. What should I do for the pain?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 10 months and 1 day old | 9 lbs

My cat pushed her paws in the fan the cover was off and it hurt three of her paws its minor but it looks like it burned and she won't stop crying I've wash it with some warn water gently its not bleeding but it looking like its giving out some inflammation and its the top of her paw pads . I don't know what to do please help

Cats are extremely sensitive to their paws, so she will definitely be painful and crying for a while. I cannot tell the extent of the damage from the pictures, but I would need to physically see the cat in order to have a better idea. The biggest worry is that something was broken. A broken bone will cause her to not walk and will cause a great amount of swelling. If you notice this, then she should go to the vet for treatment.

Otherwise, she could have been bruised, which will cause some limping for a few days. You can help relieve some of the swelling and pain by gently applying ice, or ice water to the affected areas for 15 minutes twice a day. I do not recommend giving any medication, because human pain meds can be especially dangerous if given to cats.

If Savanna is still very painful by tomorrow morning, then I recommend taking her to a vet for an evaluation. They will be able to get an idea of the extent of the damage and provide better pain control.

It is important that she get assessed by a vet to check for fractures or dislocations, or localized infection in the foot if there was a penetrating wound (possible given the evidence of blood). If it is a soft tissue injury only, I would expect swelling to decrease over the course of 7-10 days, but a vet can prescribe pain medication to help improve her comfort and also help reduce the swelling more quickly. My kitten is limping. What should I do for a paw pad burn or cut?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Judging from the photo, this looks quite mild so I would not be concerned about this. You can switch out her litter to something such as Yesterday's News so that it is not painful to walk on. I would also apply a topical ointment such as Sentry wound cream (can be found at Petco) and apply twice daily for 3-5 days. This should heal fine on its own. If you begin to notice swelling of the foot or pus coming from the area, then I would take her in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. My cat burned his paw on the stove. What should I do to help it heal?

Ouch! Running cold water on it was smart. Ideally, he should be seen by your vet since the burn looks like it goes through the pad. This could lead to infection. If this is not possible now, keep the area clean and dry. Use an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking. A dab of aloe vera gel can be applied a few times daily. Keep the e-collar on so he doesn't ingest the aloe vera. You may want to use shredded paper towels in the litterbox until the paw heals. Monitor for lameness, lethargy, swelling, discharge or odor. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

My cat cut his paw pad. Can I treat it at home or is a vet needed?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. The cut appears to be all of the way through the paw pad on the affected foot. I would suggest having this wound looked at by your vet if you can so that Bobbi can receive antibiotics and receive proper treatment. However, if you are unable to get to your vet, you could try and keep the foot clean using a diluted Betadine solution (mix Betadine with saline to get a weak brown tea color) and use this to clean the Wound. I would then switch to a different litter such as yesterday's news so that he is not getting fine litter sand in the wound. I would monitor the area for signs of swelling and discharge as this is going to be highly prone to infection. If you notice any signs of infection I would get him to your vet as soon as possible. Poor Ebony! It sounds like his paws may be injured, and he is likely in pain, so I would have him seen by a vet who can check him and treat accordingly. A vet can prescribe pain medication that is appropriate for him, as pain medication for humans can be toxic to cats. They can also clean the area to help reduce the risk of infection and check him for other injuries he may have ended up with after escaping.

Wow, I’m glad she is walking fine and using the box. You’re very lucky she wasn’t more injured. I expect she is bruised and painful. I recommend keeping her quiet and monitoring her to make sure she’s eating, drinking and walking normally. There is no safe over the counter pain medication for cats. If she’s still painful or becomes worse I recommend a veterinary exam. They can give a safe prescription medication for pain in cats if needed. Cats generally heal well on their on their own given time and rest. That was a bad fall though so please to take her in right away if you see a medical problem develop. My cat's paw was injured and he's favoring it. Should I see a vet?

Ouch, poor Tiger. Rest him today as much as possible. No running, jumping, or playing. Keep him indoors if he's allowed outside. If he still appears painful the morning, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are be fatal if given.
