What reactions can my cat have to the panleukopenia vaccine?

Animals vaccinated with a live vaccine can develop mild symptoms and shedding for a short while in the minority of cases, but inactive vaccines would not have this effect. There are many possible causes of viral and bacterial diarrhea and i would recommend testing stools parvo in affected cases if you are concerned

Vaccine reactions are rare and we usually see facial swelling and hives more often in dogs but I do think that Peanut may be having a vaccine reaction. You should take her to a emergency Vet. The mainstay of treatment for a vaccine reaction is outpatient. They give injections of steroids and possibly an antihistamine. Peanut will likely be sent home with steroids as well. I do not recommend giving her any human medications. Cats are very sensitive to medications. I hope this helps and good luck!

Well, happy early birthday to Toby. Vaccines are something that we give everyday and rarely have side effects, but side effects are certainly a possibility. The most common side effects are a mild fever, mild lethargy and discomfort at the injection site. These are the result of the vaccine stimulating the immune system and typically resolve with a day or two. More severe vaccine reactions can be analphylactic reactions and typically occur very quickly after a vaccine is given (within minutes) and may include hives, facial swelling and trouble breathing. Toby is likely already outside this time frame, so you likely do not need to worry about an anaphylactic reaction. If Toby has any signs that are abnormal after his vaccination, be sure to let your veterinarian know before he receives vaccines in the future. Please let me know if that helps. This should subside within 1-2 days. The vomiting could certainly be due to other reasons like gastroenteritis. If it does not improve or it worsens, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, him will likely start feeling better shortly. Good luck and best wishes!

You are correct. Usually if they are going to have a vaccine reaction it happens when they receive their first one. If they are giving leptospirosis this time or another vaccination such as for Lyme disease or influenza then a reaction is always possible.
