My cat had vet treatment for constipation. Why is he still hurting?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

My cat is constipated and uncomfortable. We saw the vet yesterday and she gave an enema and laxatives for the next three days. He pooped a bit after the enema. Is it normal for him to still be in discomfort?

Poor guy. Unfortunately yes he will be uncomfortable for a few days, because the hardened feces likely irritated his colon and rectum area. Also if the vet had to manually evacuate his colon, which isn't uncommon, then this can cause irritation as well.
Also with cats if they are constipated for too long, the colon will actually expand and become more elastic making it even harder to go potty the next go-round.
So it is important to recognize when Smokey is having constipation issues right away to avoid having his colon stretch (megacolon) which could become a permanent problem for him.
