My cat has an open wound and I can't afford the vet. What can I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Colorpoint Shorthair | Male | 9 months and 19 days old | 8 lbs

Hi i need urgent help, my cat has an open wound and i just found out about it, he seemed fine but he was limping a few days ago and i thought maybe he had a sprung leg and it would heal on its own, but when he crawled up on my lap his behind was facing me and i saw the open wound and i noticed it had a foul smell, i cant afford to go to the vet and i dont know what to do...is there anything i can do to help him?

It definitely sounds like Halo needs some medical attention. If that's not possible, try to gentle rinse it with a very mild soapy water and rinse well. Then put an e-collar on him so he can't lick it, and keep him inside to try to keep it cleaner. It sounds like the wound might already be infected, but it could possibly heal on it's own if kept clean. Being a young guy works in his favor here. Good luck!
