Is my cat's recurring head bump an abscess? What should I do?

I would recommend that Scooter have this bump checked out. An abscess is an infection, and I would not expect it to be there 6 months large. It is more likely to be a cyst or even a tumor. A vet can evaluate the bump, and may stick a needle inside to collect a sample of cells to look at under a microscope. Once they have a better idea of what it is, they can tell you if it needs to be surgically removed or not.

It looks like Sophia is likely developing an abscess, which is a focal internal infection - the timing makes sense if she was in a fight 3 days ago.. If so, a topical product such as Neosporin won't help - she would need systemic antibiotics, either given orally or as an injection. I recommend having her seen by your vet so she gets the appropriate treatment. In the meantime, keep the area clean by gently washing it twice daily with soapy water. It looks like she make have gotten a small wound on her head, maybe from getting swatted by another cat. Cat claws and bites tend to make wounds with small holes that seal over and trap bacteria inside. This will form a small abscess which will then rupture, which is what this appears to be to me. Keep an eye on it and keep it clean with a washcloth, warm water and a mild soap. Clean it two or three times a day and make sure to get all the soap off or it will irritate her skin. As long as it continues to improve and she is acting fine, eating and drinking, she should be fine. If it closes up again, swells, gets really red, hot, or if she starts acting sick or loses her appetite, get her in to see you vet as soon as possible as she may then need antibiotics to clear up the infection and heal.

I would recommend having your vet examine Mochi to see what is going on. It looks like there is a little hair loss as well. If your other cat scratched her and some of the bacteria from the claw punctured the skin, you may not see any blood, but she may have an abscess under the skin that needs to be treated. It is difficult to know without doing an exam and seeing the bump but it could be an abscess or cyst. Have him examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can do a fine needle aspirate to help diagnose and then recommend the best treatment plan.
