My kitten's leg lump burst, leaving a nasty hole. What should I do?

It looks painful and infectied. It may be a tumor or cyst or even an old wound that is an abscess and starting to open and drain. Clean with with warm soap and water then applly a warm compress to help the swelling. Make sure she stays confined so you can watch the area. If it ruptures and drains, it will actually be not as painful but just gently wipe the area if this happens. She does need to see a vet for antibiotics though.

Hello. This is a cat bite abscess that has ruptured. There is really nothing you need to do until the appointment. Kelly probably feels a whole lot better now that the infection has drained out of the abscess. When you see the vet, antibiotics will be prescribed & Kelly will heal soon. Hello. I would have this looked at by your vet tomorrow. The most common thing we see in cats are bite abscesses & it is really amazing how hard it is to sometimes find a bite wound. A cat's bite can leave a tiny needle like puncture & an abscess can begin to develop within hours. It can be very painful & make Buddy feel sick. The kitten needs medication, I recommend taking it to a veterinarian as it sounds like it needs antibiotics and possibly pain medication as well. Do not give any human medications as many are toxic to cats. Depending on exam findings, the vet may recommend xrays as well if they suspect significant trauma to the leg. You didn't include a picture so I cannot say for sure but the most common cause of leaking bumps on a cat would be an abscess, which is a pocket of bacteria, fluid, and inflammatory cells that is often caused by a wound (sometimes from a bite or scratch from another animal). I cannot rule out something like a cyst or a tumor that has grown too large and the skin has gotten stretched and broken open, or even a self inflicted injury from overgrooming, but the most likely answer is that this is an abscess. Pebbles should definitely be seen by her veterinarian, who will probably clean and flush the area and may recommend a culture of the area. They may also prescribe an antibiotic and maybe a pain medication, however in the meantime you can use warm compresses over the area to help it drain and to keep it clean if she allows you to. If you have an e-collar you can place that to prevent her from licking at the area and causing more bacteria (from her mouth) to enter the area. Good luck, I hope I could be helpful!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Stormy! If Stormy goes outside the lump was probably an abscess that ruptured. If he is older than it could be a ruptured tumor. I wouldn't suggest bandaging it, cats dislike bandages and it sounds like it is in a awkward location to bandage. I would use an E-collar to prevent licking. Warm compress the swelling and wound 2-3 times per day to promote drainage. Clean the wound twice daily with warm water and a mild soap. I would avoid salt because it likely stings. Then apply a triple antibiotic ointment to the open area twice daily. He really needs to area evaluated and if it is an abscess antibiotics prescribed. I would be sure to get him to the Vet this week. I hope this helps and I wish you and Stormy the best!

Hi there and thanks for posting! If you cat has a lump or mass that has appeared to have ruptured, I would visit your veterinarian right away. The mass may need to be removed or treated with antibiotics. Your veterinarian may also take a sample of the mass to determine what it is and if it needs to be removed.
