My cat isn't pooping after starting a raw diet. What should I do?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Episodes of constipation are not uncommon in cats. Be sure you are feeding Rey a diet that is high in fiber. 3-5% fiber is recommended. You can also supplement with plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in her food daily. A little extra fiber goes a long way and will help pass her stool more easily. I would also recommend a fecal test be done at your veterinarian on Rey to rule out parasites as a potential cause of the constipation. I hope this helps and best wishes to you and Rey!

If your cat hasn't pooped in three days I would be concerned about constipation. One thing you can try at home is adding some fiber to his diet, either by doing a teaspoon of metamucil on his food or some canned pumpkin on his food. If he is not already on wet food you could try adding some warm water to his food as well. If the constipation becomes severe your cat will stop eat, act painful and maybe start throwing up. If you notice any of these symptoms you should take him to your vet so they can give him medication to relieve the constipation.

If she does not seem to be troubled by it I would not be overly concerned. It is best to feed canned food (pate), human baby foods (meat flavors and organic) or canned pumpkin (if she will eat it) - any of those can help with constipation.

I feed my cat diet canned canned food which has added fiber. Most any brand will work. In addition I add a tablespoon of plain pumpkin to each feeding. The pumpkin adds more fiber and most cats like it. It works well to bulk up the stool and prevent constipation. You’ll be adding additional water also when you feed the canned food instead of dry. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend that bottle fed kittens start to be weaned at 3 weeks due to constipation issues with formula. If it has been a week since she has pooped I recommend a vet exam for an enema if needed. Constipation can be deadly for neonates. I would start canned kitten food. You can try a 1/4 tsp or less of plain canned pumpkin but extra fiber can go either way (more constipated or loosens the stool). I wish Kachie the best!

I would recommend switching to a different food such as Science Diet or Royal Canin and see if a diet change makes a difference. You may even consider adding in a fiber supplement to help bulk up her stool so that it passes without getting stuck. A probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora may also be a good idea, which can be found online quite easily. I hope this helps! However, if he is showing signs of constipation, like straining, painful defecation, very large volume of stools it is not normal and should be address. The easiest way to avoid constipation is adding fibre to the diet. You can try food supplements (can be veterinary or human product) containing inulin or psylium.
