My senior cat's poop gets stuck. What diet changes can help her?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 14 years and 8 months old | 8.5 lbs

My cat regularly gets poo stuck in her rectum, like she can’t finish properly. She is 14 and has had this problem for the last couple of years. She has wet food in the morning and dry throughout the day.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would recommend switching to a different food such as Science Diet or Royal Canin and see if a diet change makes a difference. You may even consider adding in a fiber supplement to help bulk up her stool so that it passes without getting stuck. A probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora may also be a good idea, which can be found online quite easily. I hope this helps! There can be several causes for this- constipation, certain spinal disorders, or joint pain (such as from arthritis) or other conditions that may make it difficult for Moon to pass stool normally. She Moon has been doing well otherwise, you may try giving her some extra fiber in diet by adding a teaspoon or two of plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in her food at each meal may help move things along. If you find Moon is still having stool issues, then I would recommend she see her veterinarian. Your vet may recommend x-rays to rule out pain from arthritis or run blood work to rule out systemic causes such as kidney disease.

Instead of switching food I would first start with adding a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin to each meal. That is natural fiber and most cats like it and eat it readily. Adjust the amount so the stool is larger, softer and he goes to the bathroom at least once daily. You can also open a capsule of plain Metamucil and sprinkle it on the food to increase fiber. This is likely to resolve just by increasing the amount of liquid he consumes and an easy way of doing this is by increasing the amount of wet food and decreasing the amount of dry food or just switching to a wet food diet. You could consider feeding him canned Science Diet metabolic weight management to achieve weight loss. Good luck!

If Simba is having no other symptoms other than soft stool you may want to consider adding fiber to his diet. There are some commercial diets that have increased fiber content (senior diets are typically higher in fiber). Another option would be to simply add a tablespoon of fiber powder (like Metamucil) to his food once a day. If this does not help then you may want to consider bringing a stool sample to your vet to be checked to ensure nothing else is going on. I hope this helps. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Galaxy! I recommend cisapride, lactulose and Royal canine fiber response for constipated cats. Sometimes with the prescription diet it eliminates the need for most medications. If she isn't eating I would have her seen today and deobstipated (sedate and remove all feces) before the weekend. Then get the cisaride and food started. Sometimes refractory cases need partial removal of their colons. I wish you the best!

My cat has runny poop, but it's not diarrhea. What should I do?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While adding fiber to the diet can firm up the stool, I do not recommend feeding dry bran to your cat as it can cause constipation. Daisy may be having runny stool due to parasites or inappropriate diet (too many treats, human food, etc) or because she only eats soft food. Because she is a little older, I recommend having her seen by a vet to rule out intestinal inflammation, cancer, and maldigestion.
