Why is my cat not eating and has red, agitated gums? What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 8 lbs

My cat isn't eating ,I've tried four different types of food both wet and dry and I also have noticed that his gums are red and agitated. I've tried brushing his teeth and seems like it only got worse. He has a vet appointment for Monday. I just want a second oppion on what is going on and what I should do

It's possible that Bandit has gingivitis or other oral pain causing his decrease in appetite, but there are many other diseases that cause a decreased appetite as well including a fevers or ingestion of non food items. If he seems very weak or lethargic or if he has been vomiting you may want to see an emergency veterinarian before Monday. Otherwise keep tempting him to eat and keep your appointment Monday. I would not recommend trying to brush his teeth again until your vet can take a look.
