My 7-month-old cat isn't eating food, only drinking water. Why?

There could be several reasons why your [cat will not eat](https://www.petcoach.co/article/why-isnt-my-cat-eating). Take a look inside your cat's mouth and under its tongue if you can do it safely. If you see any redness, inflammation or bleeding of the gums or around teeth, there may be [periodontal disease](https://www.petcoach.co/cat/condition/dental-disease-1/) present. Confirm there are no foreign objects (or string) in the mouth or under the tongue. If you see anything that does not appear "normal", schedule an exam with your veterinarian. Other potential causes include [kidney disease](https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-things-you-should-know-about-kidney-disease-in-cats), [pancreatitis](https://www.petcoach.co/article/pancreatitis) or gastrointestinal issues. These may require blood work and x-rays to diagnose. If the mouth is clear, try warming the food slightly or adding some liquid from a can of tuna to stimulate appetite. If your cat does not eat for 3+ days, see your vet immediately to avoid complications involving [liver function](https://www.petcoach.co/cat/condition/hepatic-lipidosis/).

Try warming the food slightly or mixing in a teaspoon if plain baby food. If he doesn't begin eating in the next 24 hours, have him physically examined by your veterinarian. A cat that does not eat for 2+ days is a serious risk of developing liver disease which may complicate any underlying condition.

Unfortunately there are many things that could be making Misti not eat. Just like humans, pets can pick up viruses, infections in the intestines, or something they shouldn’t have. Parasites, toxin ingestion or even an obstruction are all possible. Any pet who does not eat for 24 hours needs to be examined by the veterinarian. This is in fact a concerning sign in cats as inappetence can be observed with conditions such as pancreatitis, kidney disease (most likely chronic in nature), dietary indiscretion and diabetes, just to mention a few possibilities. Cats can develop serious illness when they stop eating. This is known as hepatic lipidosis which is directly related to anorexia. I recommend that if Nutmeg is not eating by tomorrow morning, to have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It sounds as your pet is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking Guinness to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Poor Gizmo Hill! If she has not eaten in three days, this is a very serious problem - cats can develop a life-threatening illness called hepatic lipidosis from not eating for multiple days in a row, so it's very important to find out what is causing her to not eat and get her started on appropriate treatment right away. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to - she may need blood work and x-rays to help diagnose the problem so that she can be treated before things get worse.

Since you cat’s behavior has changed so abruptly I would recommend taking him in to the vet to be checked out. He may have an underlying infection or virus causing his symptoms or may have intestinal parasites, which isnfaily common in young kittens.
