Why is my cat no longer cuddly or playful? Is he sick or unhappy?

Thank you for posting this question. If there has been a dramatic change then I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian to make sure he is not sick or having any complications. Hello. It would be very difficult to say if this is just a normal change in behavior, or if something is amiss. If all he is doing is napping elsewhere, has normal food & water intake, normal litter box habits, then I would just continue to observe him for a few day more. See if something else may develop or concern you, then maybe have him examined by your vet. He may be trying to develop something, or he has just decided himself to nap elsewhere. That is unusual. It may be that he’s just growing out of the playful kitten stage. As long as he’s healthy and you’ve had him examined then I would just give him time. If there is something medically wrong you should see a specific problem if it worsens. He could just be tired or sore if he had a mild injury you didn’t see. If this continues, you should have him evaluated immediately. Your vet can take a history, perform an examination, and then advise a diagnostic/treatment plan. Possible causes include pain, infection, inflammation, stress/anxiety, bite/scratch wounds if he was outside, among other things. Good luck and I hope Mittens bounces back to normal soon.

It is possible that someone else is providing him with food as well and that is the reason he is not returning for all of his meals with you. He also may be sick, dealing with an infection or systemic disease. Good Evening...thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry that Bunny is having some trouble. Was Bunny sent home with any pain medications? If not, you may want to contact your veterinarian to either get some pain medications or possibly refill some more. You may also want to schedule a recheck with your veterinarian to be sure the surgical site does not look infected. It is also normal for pets to experience abnormal behaviors for a few days after an anesthetic event - this may also be the case for Bunny. Some cats are lethargic and less playful when they have fever (I guess that was checked by your vet) or painful condition, for example muscle pain, joint pain, spinal pain and more. If his activity is not back to normal in 2-3 days I would suggest trying a short course of anti-inflammatory medications.
