Why is my cat's nipple dark, hard, and dry? Should I be concerned?

This maybbe from an old injury or from a litter mate. You can clean the area with a warm cloth and mild soap to soften it and monito for any discharge. It if does not improve the i would worry and get the kitten checked

I suggest you take her to your vet for an exam. Likely this mass will need to be surgically removed and sent to a laboratory for histopathology testing. This does look very dark, and I agree that in your picture it doesn't look like a tick. I'd recommend having your vet take a look in person to make sure the nipple has not become infected or that this isn't something like a skin tumor.

This looks like the nipple and surrounding skin is inflammed from an injury or contact with something irritating. You can clean the area with a warm wet cloth. I wouldn't put anything on it as that may make him lick it. This should improve over the next few days. If it gets worse, more discharge or he's itching the area then I would take him in for an exam. He may need an antibiotic injection and something to reduce the inflammation. From the photo this is nothing to be overly concerned about. It probably wasn't her nipple but a build up of dead skin and sebaceous material collecting around the nipple itself. If it doesn't bother her and she's not licking excessively, then there is likely no cause for concern. Monitor the redness for resolution.

Hello, and thank you for your question. I would be worried about mastitis (mammary gland infection) based on your description. Are the kittens nursing from that nipple? I would try to encourage them to nurse from all mammary glands, and if the problematic one is not being emptied, you may need to gently express it every few hours to help it empty. Warm compresses may help with this as well. Sometimes it is a problem with the kittens not being able to find the nipple, so you could also try clipping the hair around the affected gland to make it more visible and easier for the kittens to reach. At least based on these pictures I can tell you that mastitis seems unlikely as they typically also have visible swelling of the mammary glands and there is usually discharge. This may be due to dirt from them nursing or perhaps due to a mild skin infection. If it does not resolve on its own in the next 5 days or it worsens, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!
