My cat keeps mating but isn't getting pregnant. What should I do?

This is normal. You can separate them for a few hours a day then reintroduce them to help build anticipation. But yes it is common for them to mate multiple times during her heat cycle. They will stop once she gets pregnant or when she goes out of heat. If this is their first time to try or if he is young, she may not get pregnant the first heat cycle. I hope this helps!

Cats will tend to have a recurring heat cycle until they are bred, so if she isn't yet pregnant, she is likely to continue to have interest in the male, and the male in her. If you do not wish to have kittens, getting both your female spayed and your male neutered can prevent this, as well as reduce/stop the heat-related behaviors.

If the cats did not actually breed then she wouldn't become pregnant. If she goes outdoors it is possible pregnancy could occur from another cat, or if these 2 were unsupervised it is possible they had a successful mating when you weren't home.
