My cat lost his meow after vet visit & meds. Will his voice come back?

Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. Sometimes loss of voice can be seen in cats that are very weak. I recommend that you have Teddy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Perfect, you should give the medication some time to work, up to 10 days. As long as he is getting better within this time then he should be ok and his voice will return. However, if he is not doing better or if he is doing worse, then make sure you bring him back to his veterinarian immediately.

Hello, sorry to hear about Thomas. As long as he is otherwise acting like his normal self now that you are back, (eating, drinking, defecating, urinating, and having normal activity) then I would monitor at home to see if his voice returns. However, if you think Thomas is showing additional signs of illness, especially if he is not eating or if he is having a hard time chewing/ingesting his food the I would have him evaluated immediately. Ensure he has adequate food, water and that he is using the bathroom regurlarly. Best of luck and hope this helps.

Poor Teddy! Yes, I would recommend to take Teddy back in today. Male cats always have a concern for a urinary blockage which is an emergency. It’s a good idea just to have his bladder palpated to check for such a condition. The doctor may also change the antibiotic or may give him medication to soothe the stomach. If the cat has laryngitis it will usually resolve on it's own over time with no treatment. Cats are very sensitive to medications so it is not recommend you give him anything over the counter. If the laryngitis is just from overuse of the voice box or a temporary illness like a URI no treatment is needed. If the laryngitis is due to an underlying condition then he will need an extensive workup to figure out what is going on. I suggest you do nothing but monitor him for a couple weeks and if no improvement, then you should get him to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This sign is often secondary to an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or possibly to a pharyngitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective). It could be laryngitis from an upper respiratory infection. Usually, the symptoms will go away within 10 days or so.
