My cat has a loose tooth and is aggressive at the vet. What to do?

It may be ok to remove if it is fairy lose and comes out without too much manipulation. Use your fingers only when trying to pry it free. Also use care not to get bitten as this may cause some discomfort from your pet kitty. If you can't get it free,then visit your local vet for assistance. If this is a kitten tooth, then it can be removed fairly easily; however if this is an adult tooth then periodontal disease may be lurking underneath the gum requiring a full dental cleaning and extraction(s). I'd be worried in that this will be painful to Dublin. In addition, food could get caught under the loose tooth, leading to infection. This tooth will likely have to be removed, which can be done under sedation by your vet. I recommend making an appointment with your vet tomorrow to have them examine this loose tooth and removed it as needed.

So sorry that your cat is having this problem. You could take him to a veterinary dental specialist and see if the specialist will remove his tooth. Or find another vet in your area and take him for a second opinion. If his blood work is normal and he is in otherwise good health, then the risk of extracting a bad tooth is low. There is no need to take him in to your veterinarian at this time if the area where he lost the tooth is not hurting. Since you obviously have scheduled a dental cleaning for Milo, your vet can inspect the area during the dental cleaning while he is under sedation. The vet will also do dental radiographs to check for retained roots and neck lesions. These will need to be removed.

You can ask your Vet to prescribe a sedative to you to give to transport him to the Vet. Anesthesia is always risky but complications are rare and we do everything possible to eliminate risk. Neutering could definitely help the aggression problem. I would also recommend picking up a product called Feliway. It comes in a spray and a plug in and it has pheromones that can help calm your cat. You will not be able to smell it. Sometimes this helps, too. You can also spray the towel in the carrier so he can bring it with him to the vet. I would contact your vet for an oral medication to help sedate him prior to his next exam. This would help ensure his safety and every one that handles him.

I would definitely recommend leaving it alone because you could cause some pain and injury by wiggling on it. However I would consider having your vet take a look at it because safe extraction if the canine tooth may be recommended to avoid having a huge hole left behind for foodstuffs to then get clogged into. If your vet extracts the tooth instead of just letting it fall out, the vet can then close the hole with suture. This is the best approach when dealing with diseases canine teeth especially, because this is the only tooth that can leave a hole that directly communicates with the nasal passages (oronasal fistula), so we take extra precautions with this tooth in particular.
