My cat's sick: loose stool, visible eyelids. Is human dewormer safe?

Hi there! Iwa is such a gorgeous girl! It appears as though she has her third eyes up. This can be an indication that there is a problem or irritant on the eye. Usually if the eye is painful they will also rub and scratch at the eye as well as blink excessively. This can also mean absolutely nothing other than Iwa felt like putting them up. Fun fact: unlike dogs, cats actually have control of their third eyelids and can choose to put them up at will. Iwa does not appear to have any redness or swelling around her eyes. As long as she is not pawing them or rubbing them she is probably just fine. As far as the liquid stool, there is no over the counter medication for this. The important thing is to figure out why the stool is liquid and treat the underlying cause. Intestinal parasites are a common cause for diarrhea or loose stool. Your vet prescribed a general antibiotic eye drop which also contain steroids, from my experience when both third eyelids go up into the eye like this, it is usually not an eye related disease, it's more likely to be an intestinal disease. if she has not been dewormed lately, i would recommend starting by deworming her, often it is the discomfort related to the worms in the intestines that is causing this symptom. once the abdominal discomfort will be over, this symptom will disappear.

Most worms in a kitten are roundworms, which can be treated with pyrantel (commonly found over the counter in a pet store in the US). It needs to be dosed twice, 3-4 weeks apart. Tapeworms are flat, and there are also over the counter dewormers for that, as well. It is most likely that Penny has a lot of worms in her digestive tract and that, after vomiting, one of the worms was in her nose and came out when she sneezed.

The two main types of worms you can see with the human eye is tapeworms and roundworms. Since these don't look like tapeworms to you, purchase an over the counter dewormer for roundworms and give it to see to see if it helps. If you do take her in, make sure to get her vaccines done. A dewormer would be beneficial if the diarrhea is caused by worms, however if they also have eye discharge or third eyelids showing I would be concerned about other issues ongoing such as a respiratory infection or illness. The kittens, if they are about 2-3 months old, are also of the age where they should be getting their first set of vaccines, exams, etc. It would be best to bring them into your vet for a complete checkup, checking the stool to figure out the cause of the diarrhea, look at the eyes, and get started on a health and vaccination plan.

Unfortunately those types of dewormers are all prescription only, and it depends how sick is your cat as well, if he is very ill i would recommend not giving him any dewormers unless you are 100% positive he has worms. the best dewormers on the market are Profender (spot on), Drontal and milbemax.
