My cat has a liver mass. Is a benign cystadenoma a type of cancer?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 12 years and 7 months old | 11.5 lbs

Hi Trixie has been on Leukeran and prednisolone therapy for almost a year now for small cell lymphoma and is doing great but yesterday she had her ultrasound with the oncologist and they found her liver to be bright & a small mass in her liver that is suspect cystadenoma. She says it’s benign but wants to recheck in 6 wks & aspirate if it has grown. What is cystadenoma and if it’s benign does that mean non cancerous? Thank you.

I am not an oncologist but I found this article about liver masses in general and it does discuss cystadenomas:

You are correct that 'benign' means it will not spread. These tumors can cause a problem sometimes based upon size and location. I agree that a follow up ultrasound is needed. I hope this helps.
